I paid for a year without living there

Years at this apartment: 2002 - 2004
 
I lived there for 7 months, then signed a 1 year lease. I moved to Houston that month, and in order for me to break the lease, I'd have to pay back the difference between the "regular" price and the "special" which is not really the special, for all the time I had already lived there plus the new lease time. So I decided to pay $600/mo - for a year, all while the apt was empty.
