Whatever you do, don't live here!

Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2006

My husband and I and our son (who was only three and half months old at the time we moved in) lived at the Lodge at Stone Oak Ranch for six months. During that time, we had numerous problems with other "creatures" living with us. Namely, there was a mouse who frequently visited us through a hole, which we didn't notice before moving in, behind our master bathroom toilet. The apartment's only solution was to provide us with "sticky" traps. We ended up catching one mouse (which was tramatic enough as it was), but actually had to ask the apartment to patch up the hole and check other possible entry areas for mice (as if this weren't an obvious thing that they should do not only in our apartment but in the others in our building). Then, we had to ask them to clean our carpet because I couldn't stand the thought of our infant crawling around on the nasty floor, especially after finding droppings everywhere. I didn't hear back from them for quite a while about my cleaning request, and had to ask them a second time. I finally received a surprise call one afternoon (right before my son's feeding time) saying that the carpet cleaner would be at my apartment in five minutes. I frantically tried to clean everything off the floor and get my screaming son out of the apartment, then waited outside for thirty minutes while the cleaning was done, and then had to walk on a wet floor for the rest of the night.

In addition to the rodent problem, we also had bugs out the wazoo - they were everywhere! We asked the apartment to examine the seals on the doors because we could see the bugs coming in through the gaping holes, but their only solution was to send an exterminator, not see how they could prevent the bugs from getting in in the first place.

Things got even worse after we moved out. Our lease ended on November 30, 2005. According to our lease and Texas law, the apartment was required to give us our deposit back with an itemized list of deductions within 30 days of our move-out. We fulfilled all of our obligations under our lease - we had paid all of our rent, provided a move-out notice 30-days prior, and also provided a forwarding address. As of today, we still have not received our deposit back, nor have we received any explanation as to why they have kept it from us. This is despite numerous requests, including a certified demand letter, for the deposit. Every time we call, we are either connected to the answering service (which is basically worthless in terms of getting a returned call), or speak to someone who says they can't help us.

Our advice to anyone considering living here is to walk - no, run! away! It is definitely not worth the hassles, frustration, and cost, especially if you aren't keen on someone unlawfully keeping your hard-earned money without any consequences.
