I had a 6 month lease in Malibu, and the enire experience was less than pleasurable. That's sarcasm. As others mentioned, pests are out of control. Malibu had "pest people" come on one of my days off, but I returned home to no sign that they had treated or done anything. I bought roach traps myself, but there are too many to kill.
Then there's the parking. Horrible layout. I mean that. There are sections where if you don't park before 9 p.m. you will likely have to walk a quarter of a mile to get to your apartment. Doesn't seem like a lot, but think about it. Go do a lap at your nearest high school. My car was also broken into and the radio was stolen. They don't give a ----.
Some time a couple months into my lease I came home to police cars and sirens at the complex. There had been some kind of a shooting, but I wasn't around for it thankfully. This was this past fall (2006) by the way.
When I first moved in, there was frequently loud music with equally jarring bass played frequently, but to their defense it was usually during decent hours. Things have quieted down in my unit since then.
Also to mention upon move-in: seemed in decent shape, but has since been apparent that bad quality materials/workmanship were employed. The apartment has literally deteriorated around me independent of my presence there.
The big nasty though, even above all the others, was that fact that during the fall and subsequent bitter winter I FREQUENTLY GOT NO HOT WATER AT ALL. NONE. You turn on the hot faucet, and nothing would come out. It even made a dramatic air gargling and dying noise sometimes to remind me how ridiculous and almost comical the situation was. I can't express the rage that can build within even the most zen-centered person at the experience of taking a cold shower in the dead of winter.
I'll be moving out soon, I sure as hell hope I get all my deposits back. Find a place further south, below 183 if you want/need cheap North Austin living. It's worth it to pay a little more not to be up here.
