Unaffordable Prices

Years at this apartment: 2002 - 2004
We have lived here for two years and we are moving out this summer when our third contract is up. We are leaving this nice establishment because we cannot afford the rent anymore. The management first raised our rent by $50 when we resigned a six month lease, because our original contract was only six months long. Last year around this time we signed a second contract renewing a 12 month lease, hoping to reduce our rent by promising a longer stay. However, our rent was raised by another $50, which the management told us was not that much compared to what everyone else had to pay. My wife immediately called our neighbors, a couple living below us and a lady living across the street from our building, who shares the same exact unit as ours and neither party has had their rent raised upon extending their lease AND they are both paying $80 less than us. Now, I can understand why they are paying less rent because they had signed on with a one year lease to begin with; but what I do not understand is that why no one else has their rent raised when extending their stay here and only my wife and I have to pay extra' So we went back to talk to the management and see if there was any answer to our question, to our disappointment their answer was that everyone is paying at a different price and if you don?t like it then you can leave. Unsatisfied with their answer and the preferential treatment, my wife and I decided to contact the apartment?s corporate office for a better explanation. The coprorate office guy was a nice man named Marcellus, who upon learning our situation dodged our calls for two weeks, and when we finally got a hold of him (using caller ID block) he said it is an issue he cannot help us with and we have to place our plea at the grace of the management staff. Seeing the hopelessness of this situation we decided not to pursue this topic any further because one of our friends in real estate business told us that no matter how unfair it might seem, this is how it works. The management staff can basically charge you any price they see fit as long as they meet their corporate quota, so do not get on the bad side of your management staff, especially two of them also live on premises. That warning came a little late.
So it is now April and a year later, we have just received a renewal notice of our lease contract and guess what' Yup, they are raising the rent on us again! And guess what else' The only way for them not to raise the rent is if we sign a 17 month or longer lease. Now, my wife and I are in our forties and we make a decent living, but we do not wish to waste our money this way especially when we are being made complete fools of, so against our will, we are leaving this nice establishment.
This is a hard lesson learned for me and my wife and I strongly encourage you to read all posts carefully before you make your decision, because it is obvious for every negative comment the apartment receives the management staff posts three positive ones just to balance the rating out. Do not be tricked and please feel free to email me any comment or legal advice about my experience. Thank you and good luck!
