I am a current resident in this apartment complex, and I have been frustrated with the lack of attentions given to what I think is a serious problem with my apartment.
About three weeks ago I started to notice bad smell coming out of the vents when I turned on the A/C. It smells like dead animal. I reported the problem, and the lady at the apt office told me that they received similar complaints from two other apartments, and that they are taking care of the problem. The locations of those two apartments are not close to my apartment, and yet they were so convinced that it's caused by the same problem.
To make a long story short, these are the things that they have done to resolve the smell problem in my apartment so far:
1) Deodorized the apt twice (The effect of deodorizer only lasts for a day, after that the smell comes back).
2) Set a live trap, checked it once. (I understand this is a preventive measure, but it won't find or get rid of the dead animal...).
3) Cut off tree branches next to my windows (same comment as 2)).
Meanwhile, I have been living with the smell for about three weeks now. I have to have the A/C on most of the time because it's so hot here. In the mornings, when it's not very hot, I can turn the A/C off and open the windows, but that's only for a few hours.
I have made several more complaints about this, and the answer is always the same. It's always having to do with what they have done to the other two apartments. It seems like they don't take the problem in my apt seriously just because they have the same problem in another apt. One of the ladies even suggested that I used "PlugIn" to get rid of the smell. If you've done that before, you'll know that the combinations of dead animal smell and PlugIn does not work very well.
I have nothing against the company that manage The Marquis apt (CWS). In fact, before moving here, I used to live in The Marquis At Caprock Canyon for three years and never had a problem. I'm also not trying to discourage people from moving here. Just trying to share my experience and give people something to consider.

Hey, did they ever locate/remove the smell source? With how hot it's been I really hope so since A/C is not really an option and that things worked out for you.

Hi AWDriver. Sorry about the late response. I have been away, out of the country for the past several weeks.
No, they have not located the source of the smell. I think they have given up on it. The last two times I called, they just sprayed the vents with a more powerful chemical spray (it lasts a few days longer, but the smell keeps coming back...).
I finally bought some solid odor absorber products from WalMart and placed it inside the vents, in the attic, and in the place inside, near where the A/C filter is, and it seems to work pretty well in neutralizing the odor.
I know it's not an ideal solution, but it works. I will be moving out of here when the lease expires in a couple of months so I don't really care about long-term solutions. I feel sorry for the next tenant though... I would recommend that new tenants turn on the A/C and check the smell before they move in, even though you move in during winter time.
