My roommate moved out about 2 weeks after I did and left the couch up in the apartment. Martha's Vineyard apparently hired a "moving company" to move the couch out and charged us $100. 1st - If I had known he had left the couch I would have moved it myself. 2nd - If they had told me I owed $100 I would have paid it. Instead, they never called, e-mailed or sent out a letter and sent the bill directly to a collections agency. I have never had one negative thing on my credit report before that. They also never forwarded my water or electric bill. I just now - almost 2 years later found out I owed $45 to Austin Electric from a bill they never forwarded. I only now found out because I had my credit check run to buy a new car. I wrote the BBB to try and resove these issues and at least get these things off my credit report. What a nightmare.

It isn't their responsibility to forward your mail. You have to turn in a mail forward request at the post office. So that part doesn't make much sense. You are supposed to give the apts. your new address as well. Although knowing how most places operate, they will lose the info.

If you are on the lease, you need to do a walkthrough with them to make sure you don't get charged improperly. I got charged $20 (back in 2002) for leaving a bar of soap and toilet paper in the bathroom. El stupido. Par for the course with most apartments though.

Also if you read the paperwork when you move in, you signed a form that stated the prices of any work that had to be done after move out. It stated that if you leave trash it will cost X amount of money and everything. Problem is you didn't read what you were signing or you would have known you would be charged for the couch. And yes it is YOUR job to forward your mail, not thiers, you want them to wipe for you too?
