The property manager claims this is never done and am curious as to whether this is true or not

You signed a lease agreeing to those terms. It is a standard lease agreement. If you can't handle it, then you have to pay the consequences. the only people who get by on that are those that die or are in the military. Otherwise you really don't have a valid excuse, because it isn't the property manager's fault if you need to move somewhere or take a job somewhere else. all you can do is try to sublet it or just cut your losses.
