Affordable, nice place to live.

Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2008
I lived at Sandstone for three years, from August 2005-August 2008. I lived on both sides of the street - buildings I and II. Two years were in building II in the smallest one-bedroom floor plan, and one year (most recently) was with a roommate in the largest two-bedroom plan.
When I moved in in 2005, the neighborhood was quite a bit "sketchier" if you will. As it's become nicer and trendier (and hipster-y, I might add), rents have gone up. At the same time, it's still probably your best apartment bargain in the Manor/Cherrywood corridor - reasonably priced (ESPECIALLY considering the high rents of the houses in the neighborhood - I have several grad student friends that rent small houses in the Cherrywood neighborhood for much higher prices and less space) but not a rundown hellhole like the places next door.
I've noticed some comments about the new management. The management change was LONG ago - sometime in 2006. It's true that the previous managers were friendly people, but I believe the complex has become more well-run and professional since the new management came. Repairs are done in a timely manner by a dedicated maintenance person unlike before. It is true that Stephen, the manager, is sometimes hard to track down in the office, depending on the day. He has commitments to the managing company that he has to honor sometimes. I believe however that he has made improvements on being around and he's also good about responding to his cell phone. Unlike the places a lot of my friends live, Stephen has never been rude or threatening to me or my roommate.
The downsides to Sandstone were very few for me. At first there were some sketchy male characters that leered at me living there (mostly in the first year), but they're all gone now. I do believe more undergrads have discovered the complex and as a result it's gotten a wee bit louder than it was when I first came. (It's still predominantly a mix of grad students, young professionals living on the cheap, and working class families though.) I think the experience of living in Building II is nicer because of the deck and grills, as well as the covered parking, so if there are availabilities in both buildings, go for Building II.
In sum, I enjoyed living in Sandstone and never had a major problem while living there for three years. I am only moving now because I'm moving to a different stage of life (having a baby and settling down, really needed W/D connections, etc.). I would especially recommend this place to grad students - it's SUPER convenient to campus, there are great study and eating spots nearby, and you'll probably meet some fellow grad students in the complex (I've made several good friends this way).
