I lived here for one year. Twice in 4 months my car was broken into and new radios stolen (bottom of the line radios, I might add, but I guess junkies are desperate). The time spent on repair, insurance, etc was significant.
Also, mold, decrepit AC and vents, toxic industrial carpet cleaning fluids and the train making the window panes vibrate, were additional highlights. The management did respond as best they could, but the two main problems the complex has are not the fault of the management. Insufficient security for a borderline neighborhood (not all of Hyde Park is the same) and decrepit plumbing just painted over to look sound (leaks, uncontrolable tap temperature, easily blocked drains, leaking fridge, etc). Again, not mamagement's fault! They repaired everything, but i lost a lot of time.
Also, I'd have preferred to pay for a little for AC and heat and not spend a few weeks either too cold in the fall or too hot in the spring.
Might be OK for students who have no car, are not allergic or sensitive to mold or fumes, don't care about the sound of the train just outside, and are trained in self-defense (I never heard of a physical attack here but I didn't feel safe here).
Not advisable for kids.

It sounds like your needs are more then what you can afford. There are newer apartments but you choose the cheaper unit...you get what you pay for! ( you not in your Mom's house any more )
