I lived in Croix when they were all owner-occupied condos in 1983

Way back in 1983, I moved to Austin in January of that year after having graduated from TCU in May 1982. The Croix was the first place I lived in Austin. Since I was a graduate student (MPA/JD at LBJ School and UT Law) and working on the Texas Senate staff, the Croix was a perfect location...walking/biking distance to the 40 Acres and the Capitol - and, of course, Abels, and the fabulous, never-to-be-replicated 504 W. 24th building whose tenants included Les Amis, Mad Dog and Beans, Pipes Plus, Let's Go (Skate) and Fresh Hair. The Butthole Surfers and the Hickoids would play free LP release (not CD's, old vinyl 33.3 RPM LPs) concerts in the parking lot behind Mad Dog, awash in Shiner Bock and Bastrop mushrooms.
The Croix complex was brand-spanking new in 1983 - and situated among old Austin, Keep Austin Weird landmarks that almost no longer exist to the last example. In a way, the construction of the Croix was the beginning of the end for old weird West campus. Yet, from 1983 through at least 1989, the Croix and those condo projects that followed it along Rio Grande between 24th and 29th in West campus created an eclectic mix of the old weird Austin and the new dot.com Austin which exists today.
The Croix was THE place to live in the early to mid-80s...a gated private oasis with a cool pool and one of the first Jacuzzis in West campus not to mention the then state-of-the art amenities in the units (built-in microwaves, CA/CH, pre-fab fireplaces, covered private parking, ...the Croix was truly a statement of early 1980s multi-residential urban development in theme and architectural style.
