I knew going into my lease that I was not going to have a lot of space and the furnishings wouldn't be all that great. I was right...but I also liked the landscaping and amenities that Sterling had. I used the pool and hot tub many times, as well as the sand volleyball and basketball courts. When you're looking for apartments, those things don't seem like a big deal, but it made the apartment life that much more fun.
If you think you can find a nice quiet apartment at Sterling, then you're barking up the wrong tree. I personally threw many parties while I was there, and could deal with neighbors throwing them...it's a complex that caters to college students, and partying goes with the territory.
As for the the negatives...the 4 bedrooms are TINY. The furniture is as cheap as it comes and I was often scraped by the exposed staples on the couch. Management changes a lot and is mainly student run. I had to pay a fine for bolting a satellite to a fence, but I suppose I had it coming. The walls are paper thin, and if you're claustriphobic at all, the rooms at Sterling might not work for you.
Individual leases are a nice bonus and can lead to unexpected friendships, but they can also lead to an apartment not getting a full overhaul for more than 3 years...as was the case with mine. By the time I moved out, the cheap paint peeled off some parts of the wall, scuff marks were everywhere, the kitchen was in disrepair, and the carpet was filthy (though you couldn't tell because of the color and type they had chosen to use).
I lived at Sterling for 2 years, had a ton of fun, threw lots of parties, used the ameneties for all they were worth, and don't regret my decision at all. I got exactly what I expected and was happy overall.
