Learned the Hard Way

Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2007
I, too, lived there when the management changed. We liked the place beforehand so renewed our lease...worst mistake ever.
Just off the top of my head:
Painted AROUND pictures on the wall, toilets, stove, microwave, holes in the wall.
Refrigerator broke, was 'fixed' twice, then finally replaced with one about half the size after 3 fridges-full of food went bad, refused compensation or even apology.
Truck broken into twice, knew of many others.
Was approached by many drug dealers while trying to go inside, once blocked from my door.
Never saw on-site APD officer, except when he broke up our dinner party.
Pool was non-existent for about 6 months, although we paid for it.
The apartment above leaked so our ceiling fell in over our stove while cooking, three weeks later it was spray-painted over.
Over Christmas break the electricity was cut off and my roommate lost his computer, tv, and stereo. They basically told him 'tough s#*%, deal with it, you can't prove it's our fault'.
Maintenance kept a dog in their little shed (outside our building) that never got to come out.
Lights never fixed on basketball court, the whole 2 years I was there.
Attempted to evict me twice, and roommates & friends various times for not paying rent. When we went and showed them the check they had already deposited and cleared they still attempted to fine us late fees since they had 'no proof'.
Maintenance man came into my room without knocking when I had just gotten out of the shower.
Office staff unlocked my room door with no notice and came in while I was still in bed.
Attempted to move us into a unit that was still occupied, but insisted this was our place but would do nothing to remove the other people.
Tried to charge me a pet fee for my beta fish in a bowl.
There are plenty others, just a few to make my point.
I moved out in May and left a forwarding address. In NOVEMBER I received a phone call from a collections agency charging me $1000 for painting, ceiling damage, carpet cleaning costs because of my pets, keys not turned in (even though I did), and cleaning fees (cleaned it top to bottom). Of course, would never return calls. None of my roommates were ever contacted, I'm guessing it's because I was the one that had good credit and my parent's co-signed.
Run, run, run. I understand you are not paying for royalty, but you don't get your money's worth out of this place.
