The Heights treated me well

I lived in University Heights from my sophomore year in college until I graduated in May of '02. I lived in the same apartment for three years. I loved the space. You cannot get an apartment the size of U.H. apartments anywhere in Austin. The size came in very handy when throwing game day parties for football. The apartment itself was not the nicest in the city, but definitely adequate enough for two college guys to live.

There was always adequate parking. I had a couple of my friends cars get broken into while I lived there, but that is a citywide problem (my car got broken into at Melrose). I believe the apartments on the east side of burton are safer (the same side as the leasing office). The apartments on the westside are a little more ghetto.

As far as the maintenance, they were more responsive during my first two years of living there than my last. They would usually show up a couple of days after a complaint had been made and they didn't even care about the marijuana smell coming out of the bedroom. One maintenance man actually smoked with us.

The staff was friendly when it came to renewing your lease and paying rent. There was one particular female who works in the front office that is the best, she always knew who you were and hanled problems efficiently (you know who you are, Dayna). They always had fresh cookies in the office for us when we got off the Burton Drive bus coming from campus. However, a friend of mine who lived on the west side of burton, got his car towed for having one of his tires parked on the white line. He didn't get any help from the office when he went to complain. I thought this was complete BS and would've been pissed too if my car got towed from my own apartment complex for having one damn tire on the line. Other than that incident, the office staff was helpful and friendly.

The Heights is very easy access to campus and sixth street. The Burton Drive bus picks up right in front of the office and drops you off in front of Jester Center. The Burton Drive bus is also one of the most reliable bus routes at UT.

The volleyball courts have nice sand and a fence around them so you don't have to chase the ball. The only problem is getting the little kids to quit making sand castles so you can play. The putting green and basketball courts are a joke, but I always went to Gregory to play basketball anyway. The main pool is rather large and is good for a nice dip to cool off from the summer heat. Added bonus: you are not supposed to, but you can jump off the roof of the leasing office into the pool (wouldn't recomment it though). Also, I once saw a piece of feces floating in the pool. Needless to say, I never went swimming again, but College Park's pool is only a block away.

Overall, I would say the good outweighed the bad, if you are a college student who is trying to enjoy your last couple of years in college and can stand to furnish your own apartment.
