In the 12 long years I've been here I can count on one hand (exaggeratedly so) the number of times that I have had a (key word) "descent" experience when a maintenance issue was handled. Examples of the definitely NOT descent are as follows: 1.) The year I asked them to pain my 460'ish sq ft apt it took 4 days in which I had to "request special" that they include the ceiling and air vents. Then after staying in a hotel for those 4 days, I came back to discover the incredibly poor job of painting didn't even include the kitchen ceiling. A blatant line that seperated the dining area at the entrance going into the kitchen. 2.) Maybe a couple of years after I became a tenant I began having trouble with the garbage disposal freezing/seizing up. This issue was dealt with "somewhat" effectively for a few "years". After which the problem worsened to the point of it freezing again within a few months or less of having maintenance out. It got to the point I specifically requested a new disposal be installed. Upon returning home the day of the request I found the old junky one still there. After speaking with the leasing office again the next morning to inquire why a new unit had not been installed I was told that the maintenance guy told them he was able to free the unit up and that I didn't need a new unit. It froze up again within 48 hours. At this point I resigned myself to living without using it or that side of the sink for the year following, which was not pleasant. When it got to the point the build up was clogging up that side of the sink I caved in to trying one more time to get the unit replaced and was finally successful after three years. 3.) Then there was the time one of the attaching brackets of my toilet seat broke on a Thursday morning that I called in the request and found out myself kissing the porcelain at 10pm that night. When I spoke with the leasing office the next morning I was told that my toilet seat was a special size that they didn't have available on property and one had to be ordered. I of course asked why if this was the case they hadn't just left me the old one, pointing out that being a girl this was not a cool thing having to deal without. It took 5 days to get another seat. The day I finally got the new seat installed I found the installation trash from the wrapper and sticky mounting tape backings on the floor not five whole inches from the trash can I have in that part of the room. How's that for service' 4.) Ok, next there was the time my bath tub had rusted through and developed a softball sized hole near the drain. The time I called that one in I was told they would have to contract the work out. I said alright thinking this might take a little time. TWO months later I called again to inquire just how long it took to arrange such a thing because trying to tape plastic over the hole of course wasn't even close to effective in keeping water from going in the hole and I was very concerned about where that water ended up and the mold it was bound to cause. They had forgotten completely about my request. It took another week for them to replace the tub itself and an additional week for the week for them to replace the lower half of the tile wall around the inside. 5.) Or how about the time the electricity went out in only part of my apartment and the poor untrained maintenance guy on call that weekend went around trying to replace electrical outlets one by one because he didn't know to check the main breaker located in the back of my building and I had to figure out how to run an extension cord from the one working outlet to my refrigerator so my food didn't spoil. 6.) My latest adventure in maintenance paradise was just this past week and involved my air conditioning unit not cooling. I placed the call Tuesday morning, got home that night and everything seemed ok. I was cool through the night. I got home the next evening and deja vu / Groundhog Day, nothing was ok and I was not cool through the night. I placed another call to the leasing office the following morning at around 9am and was told they would have someone go over to take care of it right away, right now. I got home last night at approximately 10:30 and found my front door unlocked, my thermostat set to 70 and my lights on. (btw, with the exception of the thermostat setting this was not the first time the lights were left on and the door was left unlocked) It took multiple phone calls today just to finally speak with the manager of the complex who was mechanically apologetic once again this time using explanation that there had been some sort of issue with a another tenant who was a female that was being threatened by her ex and that they had to call the entire maintenance staff over there to protect her and then the storm came in and they had to deal with those issues. For those of you who didn't know about the storm in question, it didn't roll in until 9PM last night!!! Makes one just a bit curious about why the maintenance staff is acting as body guards, instead of calling 911 and letting the police handle the psychotic ex's and just how the storm coming in, at 9PM, could have even factored into this as any kind of explanation what-so-ever. In case you missed the math, I figure my apartment was left unlocked and my electric usage was skyrocketing somewhere between 8 to 10 hours.
NOT once have I been offered ANY type of compensation for any of the things I have endured. Not an offer of a few bucks off the rent, not a "We're sorry" card, nothing. For the most part each call of complaint has been dealt with a somewhat polite but tough nuggies attitude. Of course, each time I'm told they're sorry, it won't happen again. I guess I'm supposed to feel lucky to get that.
In the last year alone my rent was increased $75. The year before that it was $50. They told me it won't go up this year. Lucky me.
