Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2006
My husband and I lived in these apartments for 1 1/2 years. When we first saw these apartments, we fell in love with the atmosphere. The apartments are set back from the road in a quiet, park-like setting. There were a lot of trees everywhere and we reeally liked that...at first.
But what we didn't realize was, with more trees, comes more insects and bugs. Every summer, around June or so, there are all these bugs (I don't even know what they were) hanging from the trees. I mean, hundreds of bugs, I'm not kidding! They looked like little green caterpillars and they were hanging by some kind of cocoon thing and they would hang just low enough that your face would be right in it. It was so weird and gross! You couldn't really walk from your car to your apartment without running into at least several of them. Every couple of days, the maintenance would take a hose and spray them all down which made it better for about a day or two, but they would always be back.
These little caterpillars were not even the beginning of it! There were always huge water beetles and cockroaches crawling around our aparment. And I mean HUGE! On average, they were about 4-5 inches long, no kidding. And no matter how many times the exterminator came out to exterminate, they always came back. We probably saw one or two a month. I know that doesn't sound like that much, but it was enough for me!
On top of all these bugs, there was a major rodent problem as well. We never actually saw any rats or anything, but we were pretty sure we had a family of them living in our walls since we always heard them. We would be watching TV and we could hear them walking around and scratching in the walls. No kidding.
Something else I forgot to mention about the trees in the parking lot is that they were always in the middle of the spaces. It made it very hard to park. And when ACL Festival came around, forget about parking! All the people who were going to the festival would park in our aparments since it was so close to the park. And although the office put up signs about towing, they would never do anything about it.
Another problem with these apartments was that since they were built in the 70's, there were problems with the old A/C units and water heaters. We always had to pay really high electricity bills because we would have to turn the A/C up really high and it never got cool enough. Or it might get really cold in one room and stay really hot in another room. We called the office to tell them of this problem when we first moved in and they told us that it was "normal" for apartments that old. So they never did anything or gave us any solution to fix the problem.
Our water also never stayed at a decent temperature when we took showers. It would be a good temperature for about 2-3 minutes, and then it would get either really hot or really cold for the rest of the shower. We really learned to take quick showers after living there! They also had to turn off the water heater about once a month to do maintenance to it. But I don't know what they were really doing to it because it never seemed to get any better.
The staff in the office was alright. When we first signed the lease, we had a really nice young man help us. There was also a girl there that was always really polite and helpful, but eventually they both left and the people that replaced them were rude and never really helpful.
My husband had his car broken into and had his stereo system stolen and when we told the office about it, they refused to do anything about it. We asked them to put out a notice or something to warn the other residents but they said that they couldn't do that.
One good thing about our whole experience was that our work orders were usully responded to pretty quickly. Unfortunately, their response to everything was "It's because this apartment was built in the 70's..."
Overall, I would not recommend this apartment to anyone I know.
