MOLD, LEAKING WATER HEATER...

I moved into Wyndhaven in January of 2007. I was pretty excited because it seemed like a great deal. I'm living with my sister who is a teacher and she was given a monthly "teacher discount". Not many apartments around town do that so we were both pretty excited. The one thing that sold me was the amazing space behind the complex. There is a large field with frisbee gold and a trail that weaves throughout the surrounding neighborhood. Unfortunately as the months have passed the only thing that excites me is that fact that my lease will soon be up and I can get the heck out of here.

I will briefly describe the worst of my problems.

*The apartment manager lost our rent checks one month. She then had the audacity to knock on my door and serve me an eviction notice. I explained to her that my sister had turned in the rent several days ago. She of course was doubtful, so I had my sister go to the office to set things straight. My sister had turned our checks into the same woman who served us with a notice. I did notice that when she came to the door she had a large stack on notices so she must have misplaced several tenants checks. After canceling our checks, which of course banks charge you for, it was resolved. At least they deducted what we were charged from the next months rent.

*I turned in a maintenance request form because I have a horrible cause of MOLD growing on my bedroom walls. That was more than two months ago and nothing has been done. Even after the maintence crew came by to do "inspections", which they have randomly done twice, nothing has been done. We have called several time and they always say "Yes, we are sending someone out there tomorrow." and still nothing has been done. I am not one to complain but when my health could be at risk I have a problem.

*During one of the random inspections the maintenance guys realized that our water heater is leaking. My sister and I had been wondering why our water bill was so incredibly high. They entered our apartment a few days later (September 26, 2007) and left a note explaining that they were assessing what needed to be done. They have not been back to fix the problem even after we called to follow up. The worse part about it is that, as they take their time, our water bills continue to rise.

There are several other minor problems that I can live with like:

the poor job that they did resurfacing my tub. I have to make sure I have no paint flakes stuck on me everytime I shower.

the incredible thin walls and ceiling. I can hear every single step the person above me takes. If you have ever lived in a situation like this you know how awful it is to hear footsteps, thuds, chairs moving, etc. at all times of the day and night. I of course do not fault the person living above me because it is obvious that the building, which I believe was built around 1996, is in horrible shape.

the fact that the security fence does not work 75% of the time. Luckily me or my sister have never had our cars broken into. This could be because we live in the first building at the front of the complex.

I realize that this is getting long so I will end this with a bit of advice. If you chose to take a tour of this complex be very observant about everything. Check for cracks on the walls and ceilings, check the water heater closet (ours looks pretty outdated), ask to see several different models, and ask to see the apartment you will be renting, if possible. The decision is yours, but I really hope to discourage you from making, what could be, a big mistake.
