Ups and Downs

I've lived here for about 2 years. There are definitely some good things about it and there have been a few bad things. The management team has changed since I moved in. The former team was very nice but not terribly effective about repairs and whatnot. The new team seems somewhat better and they are friendly. The townhomes are very spacious and you have your own private fenced back yard, which is a nice amenity. Pets are allowed, which is sometimes hard to find. In my townhouse, the AC unit is "too small to cool the entire space effectively" (that's a quote from the management staff) which means that in the summer it pretty much runs non-stop. The thermostat control is upstairs so the downstairs gets very cold and still the unit runs. Many people have put window units in their bedrooms (I see them as I drive into the complex). My electric bill in the summer averages about $220, which is pretty exorbitant. At one point, I had a leak in the laundry room of my apartment. I called to get it taken care of and they came immediately. I thought it was a pipe but it turned out to be the AC unit. The worker who came "fixed" the problem by putting a big wooden box which was placed inside a plastic garbage bag, inside the AC closet to catch the water. I had to bail the thing out every day for months. Finally, when the leakage got so bad that a neighbor complained, they came and fixed the unit properly and then left me a nasty note that I should have "reported the problem". My front door was supposed to have been replaced before I moved in. The door is dented on the outside. I don't mind that too much, but the door frame has rotted and my townhouse could EASILY be broken into without much difficulty. Around the door there's a place where the molding came away inside and you can see a giant hole leading to the outside where the wall has rotted away. I've mentioned this to them and they said they'd take care of it right away. The last management team never did. The current management team has been notified and still it's not fixed. When I moved in, I knew I had to pay all utilities. My "water" bill was about $12 per month. It has since jumped to $30 per month and held steady around there. They started adding a charge for trash pickup onto the water bill which accounts for a big part of the hike.

Generally, it's pretty quiet and not a bad place to live. A small family would have plenty of space with 2 very large bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. I'll probably leave at the end of this lease because my rent jumped from $815 to $850 last time the lease expired and will most likely go up again. You might wish for more windows as you don't get too much natural light, but it's still an okay place to live. If you're looking for a big space, this is pretty good. If you'd like a very modern space, look elsewhere.
