Almost Recommendable

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2004
The funny thing is that I actually recommended some fellow grad students to Doux Chene some months ago, but would not again at this time. If a few items were addressed by management, I think I would feel comfortable recommending them again.
My experience (and opinions) follow:
1. Management is definitely responsive, courteous, and more than generous (on many occassions). I could be a hard ass at times, but the management always remained professional.
2. The Maintenance personnel responded fairly quickly, and resolved to my satisfaction, all problems...except one, which is why I could not recommend Doux Chene at this time. My neighbours smoke in their house next door, and the second hand smoke seeps through a hole in the access ceiling of the bathroom. During the winter, when the heater kicked on, it smelt and felt like a 24 hr. pool hall in our apartment. It was definitely a health concern. Having worked in construction for over 7 years, I can tell you that the solution is easy. I could have done it myself, and recommended to several maintenance staff the easy solution. However, some duct tape placed around an irrelevant place was all that was done. I give a grade of B for effort, but F for completion. Needless to say, I am moving out for this very reason. I feel that health concerns should be bumped up to a higher priority on the Managements list.
3. Many services are offered, including wireless internet. The appliances are in well order and usable. The kitchen countertops, however, were originally glossed over with regular wall paint. And, several months later, they are peeling from normal water and moisture from surrounding fixtures.
4. I have not had a serious issue with bugs or pests. In fact, the management is very responsive to pest control requests.
5. Apparently, the insulation that buffers neighbouring units is very thin (or just suffering from old age). Therefore, at times, you can hear the television from a neighbour, or an occassional conversation. It is not a major problem, and has only been a minor nuisance at times. However, since large pets are allowed in the units, on a regular basis I can hear 2 medium size dogs trampling around the floor from the unit above me.
* Overall, my experience here has been uneventful, which is good. The management is professional, but needs to address higher priority concerns in a better fashion. Overall, I would give Doux Chene apartments a grade of C . They are one of the least expensive apartment complexes around town, and they provide above average service in comparison to the rent. I would lease from them again in the future if I saw a few changes implemented.
