Good and Bad

Doux Chene honestly wasnt as bad as some people have made it out to be. Ive noticed that one person made a comment about a fire that occurred at the apartment and the apartment responded to that. The fire was NOT caused by faulty wiring but was indeed caused by a lightning strike. I was there and quite awake when it happened; in fact, I didnt go to bed until the fire was out and the Fire trucks were leaving.

Doux Chene had its problems, but for the most part, I was pretty satisfied with them. Theyre an older complex, true, but their maintenance was usually very prompt and had things done within 24-48 hours, or within an hour or two if it was an emergency. Most of the time, if I called in the morning, they were there by the afternoon and it was fixed. The air conditioner was quite old and actually doubled our electricity bill because of it, so you may wish to keep that in mind.

They have high speed wireless internet which is very nice, but has had its share of problems. It would go down at least once or twice a month (a couple of times, more than that). Both my husband and I were quite knowledgeable about computers (I did tech support, he had a comp sci degree) but because their Internet service was done through Agnitek, we had to call the apartment and then the apartment had to call them. It finally got to the point that Agnitek knew who we were and we would just call the man in charge straight instead of going through the apartment. The people at Agnitek were very knowledgeable, but I think the technology was quite new to them from the reactions as well as an admission on the part of one of the men who came out to help us. They were also not available on weekends and that seemed to be when the internet decided to go down the most. They were, however, extremely nice and tried to help us however they could when they were available.

As for the staff, they were prompt about getting maintenance to come fix our problems and were very businesslike - unfortunately, too businesslike. Their attitudes were actually very cold and distance when dealing with them, except for twice. Once was when we were viewing the apartments to decide whether or not to live there and the second time was when we were thinking about upgrading from an efficiency to a one bedroom. They made a point to be quite friendly then. Afterwards, however, when we found out we were going to have to move (other issues, wont discuss here), they were very cold and unhelpful. They were quite prompt, though, about getting our deposits back to us.

The neighborhood wasnt *too* bad, though I didnt feel safe enough to walk alone at night. There were a couple of break-ins into cars, but I think thats just going to happen when you have a lot of students around, unfortunately. The greenery was well taken care of, but some of the entrances had to be taken very slowly or your car would get scraped each and every time.

If you are a student and dont care so much about the distant treatment as long as things get taken care of, then this should suit you fine. Doux Chene is rather inexpensive, though you will either need to have a car or take the bus to TAMU (theres a bus stop RIGHT at the apartment complex, so its VERY convenient).

If you have a family, I honestly wouldnt recommend this apartment complex. Its okay, but I might find someplace nicer and more well lit and newer to take my family, or, perhaps, for a short-term live such as taking over a lease until you can find something else.
