I lived here with my mom for some years while she needed help financially. Yes, there are drug deals made here. Aren't there everywhere' Yes, there were some shady characters about. Once again, anywhere you go. Yes, I could smell people smoking pot from my doorway (this is, afterall, a college town.) But, for all those who need a little help, this place wasn't so bad. Ms. Ruby became a good friend of mine. I had a few friends who lived there. THe biggest problem I had was with the police. I am white, and I was stopped several times leaving with my friends. The pd's excuse was we were coming from a "high narcotics traffic area". If that was the problem, why didn't they go in a bust the drugdealers' I did not like being harassed because of my ethnicity. I know that the majority of tenants were black. Whooptido! Who cares about that' Most of the tenants were families trying to eek out a life. Many, like mine, were single mothers. So if Southgate wants to clean up it's act, all they would have to do is run background checks. That would keep out a bit of the riffraff. But if you need the help and are willing to be careful, this may just work for you.
