subleasing was a fiasco

I enjoyed living a the Treehouse while I was there. The air conditioning only broke a couple of times, and the covered parking is good to have when a hail storm comes through town.

But when I got an internship one semester and had to sublease, I felt I was treated unfairly by the management.

First, there was a $100 "paperwork fee" to sublease my apartment. Then the management claimed to have not received my key when I moved out, even though a friend witnessed me dropping it through the mail slot in a clearly marked envelope. Later the key was found, I suppose, because I didn't hear anything else.

A few months later, I received a bill (or rather, I received a bill with my subleasee's name, but addressed to me) for $65.88 from a collection agency. Apparently, the subleasee did not pay the electrical bill when they left. I wrote the collection agency, and they said the responsibility for the charge lay with my subleasee.

However, the Treehouse mgmt still says I owe them the electrical bill, and I am unable to proceed with leasing from other management companies unless the situation is resolved. So I ended up paying for the electrical bill because I really had no choice.

What also feels unfair is that they also confiscated the entire security deposit ($150). There was $40.05 for carpet cleaning (understandable), but also 5 for the cleaning the kitchen counters, 30 for food in the refrigerator, 15 for cleaning the bathroom floors, 15 for the bathroom sink and mirror, 25 for the tub, 5 for the light fixture, and 15 for the toilet.

All of which totals $150 and 5 cents.

If you pay all your bills on time and never have to sublease, the Treehouse may be an OK place to live.

But this bad subleasing experience and the interaction with a merciless management has convinced me that I would never want to live at the Treehouse again, nor would I recommend it to my friends.
