Horrible Management- Left with $800 bill

My time at Pinewood had a rocky start back in Feb 2005- I moved into an aquaintence's old apartment, who had cats, and when my move in date rolled around I went through the walkthrough and the cat piss stench was awful, so after convincing a disbelieving apt manager (believe his name was Dan) to do a walkthrough with us, he decided to send the make ready people to come make the apartment livable. The new paint smell and shampooed carpet only left a faint trace of cat smell- which was noted on my walk through.

Then around June 2005 I started having more problems- first, a bike got stolen from under my garage. It had a flat tire and had sat for months unmolested, and late one night we aired up the tire, and next morning by 9am it was gone. We reported this to the apt manager, but weren't expecting anything- it was an old crappy bike anyway. This was after we had 2 (different) cars broken into, CDs stolen out of one, and they attempted to steal the CD player out of the other.

Then mid July I had some kind of water leak in my dining room, in the wall between the dining room and kitchen. I called late saturday night, and again early monday morning to make sure management got my message. No one was sent out til later that week. The maintenence man couldn't figure out what it was, and didn't come back. Two weeks later, and several calls later, they send someone else out, they don't know what it is either. So nearly two weeks after THAT, I snagged one of the maintenence guys and asked him to look at it, and HE made sure someone came to fix it (was a leak in our neighbors' A/C apparently). They fixed it a week before I moved out.

By that time it had evolved from a wet corner of carpet to the majority of the wall SOAKED, carpet SOAKED, mold on the wall, awful stench, and on the other side in the kitchen, the molding and paint itself was peeling off the wall.

So, I move out- make sure all my paperwork is in order, already put in my notice (they originally told me I'd pay a reletting fee, then realized my lease was actually over), turned off my electricity, and move on.

I've been expecting my deposit, since they did the walk through of my apartment about 5 days before the month was up (even though I paid the whole month's rent, apparently I don't get any kind of prorated rent back for being out early- and for them having proof of it, along with my key). Friday night I got a letter all right- a bill. Saying that not only would I get none of the deposit back, but I would also be charged $800 on top of my deposit that they were keeping for NEW CARPET!!!!!!

They (specifically Danielle Cuellar- don't know what happened to previous guy) accused me of having animals, which apparently urinated all over upstairs and downstairs. She would not listen when I suggested the wet carpet and lack of A/C may have brought out the old smells, and the carpet should have been replaced after the previous tenant moved out. I suggested maybe it was just the MOLD I lived with for a month, but was assured that "no this is animal urine" and it was "not faint" as I had put on my walkthrough, but "unlivable". Did I mention she was VERY rude, and entirely unhelpful'

The owner was supposed to call me today (Monday Aug 8 2005) but when I didn't hear from him, I called Danielle back, and was informed that he didn't want to speak to me and wouldn't and I was welcome to write him (but of course with no guarantee I'd hear back from him).

Do not live here- don't take the risk of being held responsible for someone else's (or the apartment's) bills.

You should have taken that place to court thru the Justic of the Peace here in Conroe. If unsatified tenants would do this and more often, these managers would stop this nonscience and be more truthful. And the apts. would have to pay for your expense plus $500 and any attorney fees if applicable.
