Wood River Apartments

Not a good experience

Years at this apartment: 2000 - 2005
I occupied an apartment at Wood River for more than 5 years. The one I moved into was NOT as nice as the one showed to me when I was apartment-hunting. The carpets had not been cleaned, and the place was in a state of disrepair. The kitchen and bathroom cabinets were breaking up. Sliding closet doors in two of the bedrooms were broken and barely hanging on. Floor tiles in the bathrooms were crooked and looked unprofessionally installed. There were holes in the walls. Most all of this was noted on a move-in inventory sheet.
During my stay there, the place was infested with roaches almost 100% of the time. It was infested with fleas one time for over a month. The roach extermination treatments were not very effective. I had to get rid of the fleas myself.
I will admit that my experiences with the manager and the maintenance people were always friendly. They seemed like nice people to me, but management only addressed complaints about half the time. Problems which WERE addressed mainly amounted to things like garbage disposal issues, air conditioning and smoke deteector malfunctions. But carpentry concerns were NEVER addressed.
When I moved out, I spent HOURS cleaning the place up. When I left, the apartment was CLEANER than when I moved in in July, 2000. They NEVER refunded my deposit. When I asked why, they told me that I "left it dirty." They claimed to have pictures to support their claim, but could never produce any. I am aware that this complex has a reputation of not returning deposits, but I really thought that since I had worked so hard to clean it up, and because the staff always was so friendly to me, that I would get it back...especially in light of the fact that it was only $250. But...nope. If you give these people a deposit, you might as well kiss that money goodbye.
What annoyed me most was the fact that the company was systematically remodeling the apartments, and bringing them up to a better, more livable standard. They were installing new cabinets, carpets, etc. And they used the occasion of my move out to remodel my old apartment. They went in and really did a nice job with it. That being the case...I feel that since my old apartment was up for a complete remodel, then EVEN IF I HAD NOT CLEANED THE APARTMENT, I should have received my deposit because it was not slated to be re-rented until the remodel was finished anyway!
I have other complaints, but they are mostly minor, and amount to the basic disadvantages of living in apartments to begin with.
I would not recommend Wood River Apartments unless, like me, you just desperately need a place which DOES have a good school district. And you should do everything in your power to get away as quickly as possible. And forget about your deposit. It is history.
