Pros and Cons - Just Like Everywhere Else

Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2007
I have lived here a little less than a year and came from living in a house in the sticks, so it's been awhile since I lived in an "apartment community", but I did use this site when I was looking so I thought I'd give back. I'm going to jot down a few Pros and Cons about the place that I have experienced, here goes:
Pros.
Fairly quiet (see below for related Con)- Solid construction eliminates most of the normal apartment noise. I never hear anyone in my building once I'm in my apartment. Occasionally, the sonic tunnel created between the buildings (think of an NYC-style street) amplifies outside noise. Like last night, this couple sounded like they were fighting into a PA system. Great theater though, I turned off the TV and listened in.
Good Floorplan - Open loft-like design makes the most of the square footage, including the ability to eliminate pesky things like closets.
Pool - Nice. And not in my building. Thank God.
People - Most everyone here is friendly. A combination of trust-fund kids (lots of nice, nice cars that don't move until after noonand don't come home until after 2am) and hard-working professionals that just want a nice place to live. Since it's not in the middle of West Village, the douche factor is quite a bit lower.
Location - At the end of the Tollway. So convenient for getaways. I would avoid living in the building that faces the Tollway though. I can't imagine how noisy that is. Speaking of noise....
Cons.
Airplane Noise - We are in the flight path of Love Field. It starts early - around 6am. I've tried "shsshing" them, it doesn't work. I'm a deep sleeper, so ultimately no big deal.
Parking Security - The gate "breaks" on average twice a month, which occasionally results in "break-ins" to the cars. We do have our share of crackheads wandering the neighborhood with rocks (of many kinds) and lots of iPods and packages left on the front seats of cars. As they say, "Luck is when preparation and opportunity meet". When the gate isn't operational they should have a security officer there to protect people's cars until it's repaired. That seems like a no-brainer to me.
Management - It was great when Heidi was there - now not so great - just average. If I get one more flier on my door from management about wanting me to provide referrals, I may lose it. They also don't seem to do anymore "resident parties" which was always a great chance to grab 20 of whatever they were serving, head back to my place and not have to cook or make a beer run for several days.
Appliances - The dishwasher sounds louder than standing next to a 737, and the oven is a cheap piece of crap that struggles to boil water. But they are black so they look cool. Which is really all that matters, isn't it'
Food Smells - Someone on my floor likes to cook "beefy mac" or something once a week. It's rank. When I find out who it is, I'm going to seal their apartment door with the plastic drop cloth and duct tape I've been saving since Homeland Security told us to expect chemical and biological terrorism to hit home. I think it has.
Other Notes:
They have a "resident lounge" which is only open when the office is - it's ok - Flat panel TV (Plasma or LCD, one of the two), couches, kitchen. Endless possibilities - maybe host baby shower or a scrapbooking party' Anybody still do Amway' Great for a low-level Amway meeting.
There is also a "internet lounge" which laughably, lights up and faces the street, so the cast of Resident Evil can easily case the merchandise when they wander by at night. They've had several computers swiped outta there, but I'm guessing it's probably the meth-head cousin (you know, we all have one) of some resident because they've been "inside" jobs. They had a funny note on the lounge door the other day - "Dear Residents, we regret to inform you the internet lounge is closed due to unforseen circumstances." You mean you didn't forsee that someone would rip the place off again - did you think they were finished' The only people I ever saw in there (from the street, remember) were dudes and teenage girls trying to get their MySpace fix. The lounge isn't needed - Anyone paying this kind of rent should have their own computer and internet connection. And if you're down there at 3am you're up to no good anyway. They should install a police substation in the room instead to curb the car break-ins.
So, overall I like living here, it is a bit pricey, but a decent value. And if you want to live in the city you have to deal with occassional property crime. And, it's a block from Sal's Pizza - the best in Dallas. What more can you want'
