long but thorough...hope this helps in decision-making

It was really hard to pick a rating for this apartment because it definitely has its pros and cons. It's easy to list all of the cons and it would look like a bad place to live, but in general I have enjoyed living here and love my apartment. My layout is great and nice looking inside, there is always enough parking space, I've never had any huge maintenance issues or problems with management, it is relatively quiet, and in general, I have not felt extremely unsafe while living here, though there are DEFINITELY safety issues.
That being said, here are some of the negatives for anyone looking into living here:
1. Number one problem is the safety issue. There are locked gates into the parking garage, but many times they have been broken and instead of fixing them immediately, they prop them open so pretty much anyone can come in. This neighborhood is not exactly great (several blocks away from a pretty bad part of town), but I have never had any issues where I felt threatened or unsafe. I think if you park in the parking garage and not on the street, your car is generally safe from being broken into. I think this issue is more an issue of just being smart...don't leave valuables in your car and I would never walk around this area at night alone. I've heard stories about people being mugged and threatened...just be smart!
Another safety issue is the elevators. Whenever the power goes out, these are obviously not functioning and you have to use the stairs...which turns out to be a problem because the stairwells are not lit and for some reason half of the doors won't unlock...it can be a little scary if you're going down to your car in the dark to the unlocked parking garage. The power has gone out probably 3 times since I've lived here.
2. My next biggest problem has been a groundskeeping problem. I really don't think it's entirely the management's fault (though obviously they could do something about it and clean up), but it seems like the people living here have changed since we initially moved in. It was pretty quiet and empty when we first got here, and now there are a lot more people and holy crap, they are slobs. There is ALWAYS some kind of trash in the hallway in front of my apartment and generally dog pee in either the elevator foyer or the elevator itself. I'm not exaggerating, there is trash and pee all over the place. This is my biggest pet peeve. THROW YOUR TRASH AWAY and don't let your dogs pee all over the place where we live!!! Management has put a notice on the door but it doesn't seem to have helped. There are beer cans everywhere and maybe a few trashcans by the elevator would help since these people seem to think it's okay to just throw their trash all over the ground. It's gross and I've been embarrassed bringing friends and family over and having them have to walk around to avoid pee puddles and beer cans. There are way too many dogs living here, but that is just a personal annoyance. There has also been vomit and what appeared to be human fecal matter in the basement parking garage a few times...gross.
3. I feel like the apartments were constructed pretty well, we haven't had any major problems with ours. There are little things that bother my boyfriend more than they bother me...the ice maker sounds like a scary growling animal and it makes noises for no reason. The dishwasher is really loud. The gym has TVs on the treadmills and bikes, but most of them don't work. That's pretty much it as far as maintenance goes, and the kitchen is so cute I don't mind it at all.
4. Another problem that has not really been a big deal to me but really irritates my boyfriend is the office staff. Their answering machine says their hours are until 6 but they are NEVER there that late, which is annoying if you want to check if they have a package for you after work. We always pay our rent and bills on time and in full, and the one time we slipped up and missed ONE DAY of payment we got an EVICTION NOTICE on our door informing us we had to move out by a certain date..when my boyfriend went to talk to them they were just like "oh it's no big deal, that's just our policy, don't worry about it." Okay, well your policy definitely caused some undue stress and embarrassment and it's pretty insulting to be treated like that when you're paying so much for rent.
Okay those are all my complaints. I know it seems long, but it is easier to write about complaints than things I like and appreciate. None of these are major enough to make me want to leave my apartment, but we are going to be moving when our lease is up to try to find something a little more affordable. In looking around I have really come to appreciate our apartment even more, because it's really hard to find something nice, affordable, and not tiny in this area. Overall it's quiet, management is nice enough, parking is good, I love that it has a washer/dryer, granite countertops and stainless steel (overall, pretty!), the pool is awesome, gym is great, my apartment is the right size, and it's a GREAT location. I think the safety and groundskeeping issues could be solved if management would put in a little more effort and the tenants had a little respect for their home and for other people. I would probably be very annoyed by this stuff if I were paying more for rent, but we have one of the lowest priced units in the complex. But if I were paying as much as some of the other people there, I would gripe and moan too! And I wouldn't throw my trash on the ground or let my dog pee everywhere!! :)
