So I came from San Francisco, CA to work in Dallas. I have friends who live in various other apartments spread across dallas, so i think i'm qualified to speak on the conditions comparatively speaking. I'm 24 years old, single, and I have the one bedroom/one bath astoria unit. I have to say, I love it a lot and it will be difficult to say goodbye in a month. The reason I'm leaving is the money. $830 for 666 square ft is too rich for my blood, and I'd like to start saving some money anyway. Gonna move out to a cheaper place thats farther away but around the same size.
The area is OK; nothing of mine has ever been vandalized and I park my car directly on the street as my apt is closer to the street than the parking garage. The reason I've been ok w/paying that kind of money is the close proximity to downtown where my job is. You might hear a drunken youngster stumbling thru the street on a wknd night, but hey, you're living in an immense apartment complex so what do you expect' As for noise in general, the walls aren't particularly thin...I've never heard the TV or music from my neighbors, and I live on the first floor.
Mail/packages go to the front office where they'll hold it for you. Never had a problem with that. Let's see here...ah yes, all the appliances, fixtures, etc are all pretty new and I've had zero problems with the unit itself. There was an annoying switch from directv to timewarner but other than that I was never really bothered. If you can afford it, and you want to live as downtown as possible, I say go right ahead. Don't let the internet histrionics ("this is a warzone!!!one111!!!") sway you. A move across the street to the west village and greenville will unnecessarily set you back even more $$, but if thats how you roll, more power to you.
