Could have been worse

It is dirt cheap which is a positive if you were a student like I was while I lived there. Corners have been cut everywhere in terms of the quality of this complex. When I first moved in I found that in what the floor plan called a "pantry", the hot water heater was located.

During my first summer there, some sketchy contractors replaced most of the rotted wood (and there was a lot) on the complex exterior. The problem is that they didn't finish in my part of the complex, but they did a good job of making it look like they did. A large gaping hole was left above my liviing room window through which water poured into my apartment during a rainstorm. This hole, however, was concealed because it was right under the walkway for the apartment above mine. I reported this to the office that summer and was told that it would be taken care of by the contractors as they were still working, but in a different part of the complex. It was never fixed.

That same summer, a pipe in the apartment above mine burst and leaked into the hall bathroom. 3-4 inches of water covered the hallway and soaked the carpet of my roommate's bedroom. Maintenance was very fast, responding within 10 minutes of my calling, even though it was 9 at night. The floor was cleaned, the carpet was treated to prevent black mold, and then the entire apartment was steam cleaned. The plumber fixed the pipe the next day and the holes in both bathrooms were patched (though less than professionally) the day after that. This represents the ONLY positive maintenance experience I had.

There are many problems with the place. I'm a pretty neat and clean person, but roaches abounded, no matter how much spraying was done. Last August, a rodent of some kind found a way into the apartment and ran around for a day and half while I kept calling the office to tell them to send an exterminator. By the time someone arrived to trap it, it had died inside a closet. Roaches are one thing, but a rodent' That's quite another. They were unable to tell me how he got in.

Security left much to be desired. There was a private security company hired to patrol the complex, but I saw the Dallas Police driving through far more often. The 'security' gates were always open and everyone seems to know the code. And the sliding glass door in my bedroom relied upon only a bar and no locking mechanism to keep people out. Not reassuring at all.

Now that I've moved to a much nicer place, I actually received my last bill from them claiming I never paid for my January electricity and said that my water bill is twice what it was when I lived there.

All that being said, it's not a terrible place. I wouldn't live there again if you paid me, but if you're a poor college student, then it's not that bad of an option.
