Gunshots and a dead body outside my bedroom window!

I have lived in Camden Farmers Market for the last 3 1/2 years and overall have had a good experience. My complaint would definitely be that the neighborhood and Deep Ellum is not a safe place to live anymore. This is not Camden's fault obviously but is causing me to move.
On March 14th I woke up to voices and gunshots literally outside my bedroom window and the 6:30 a.m. news was broadcasted with Camden and my building in the background. Prior to that my boyfriend came home late one night to an ambulance and a police car outside my bedroom window. He walked out on the balcony (which is on the first floor) to ask the officer what had happened. The officer was very polite but told him there had been a shooting downtown and two young men had gotten lost on their way to Baylor Hospital. They were still on the street talking to other officers. Unfortunately the gun shot victim did not make it and was in the back seat of the car.
I have lived in three different apartments at Camden. After the first year I downsized to a one bedroom to live by myself instead of with a roommate. Then I was offered such great specials when my lease was up, for only a little more, I moved back into a two bedroom by myself.
Parking: Besides the gunshots, the gates are easily accessible to many people who are not residents of Camden and I am not sure exactly what the security guards do besides drive around on the golf carts. I have not had any problems but I have heard countless stories of car burglaries and a few assaults late at night in the parking garage. Of course not any place is completely safe and you do have to take precautions like not walking alone in the garage late at night and not leaving anything in your car, not even a CD. On a positive note there is plenty of parking for everyone.
Noise level: I live on the first floor and for a long time did not have anyone living above me. The walls are very thin and now that someone has moved in, you can hear everything from footsteps to laundry being done.
Grounds: The grounds are very well kept with nice flowers and courtyards. The pools are huge and a great place to meet people in the summer. The annual pool party is always a huge success.
Safety: Do I need to say more' Please read the title of my review.
Construction: Of the three apartments I have lived in two of the bathroom ceilings have had horrible leaks (one as recently as two weeks ago) where the maintenance staff had to cut holes in my ceiling and then re-plaster and paint. I also have friends who have lived in Camden and had the same problem. On a positive note, the maintenance staff was always friendly and made the repairs quickly.
Maintenance: Always friendly and quick to respond to any problems I have had.
Office Staff: Personally I have had no problems with the office staff. They have always been friendly and helpful. But, a friend of mine had several incidents that were handled VERY unprofessionally.
Overall: I have enjoyed living in Camden the last 3 1/2 years but do not feel safe living there anymore.

I have to agree with this review almost entirely. My boyfriend lives here and on at least one occasion, I was woken up by gunshots in the middle of the night. If you do live here, I would say live on the 3rd floor, otherwise, you will hear absolutely every move that your upstairs neighbors make. Honestly, it's like they're 400 pound men in tap shoes...who bowl. My boyfriend has never had leak issues, though. I really love the layout of the apartment, and they appear well-designed. The gunshots and noise are real issues, though. |
