Here's the deal

Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2008
My boyfriend and I have lived in The Corners for 1 year now. We will be moving when our lease runs up in September, but only because we both work in Las Colinas and gas prices are killing us!
The Corners is not glamorous. Yes the appliances are old, but they function. Maintenance replaced our disposal 2 days after we reported trouble (and it only took this long because they had to order a part for it). The maintenance crew are nice guys, and really don't care that I have an "illegal" dog. The Village turns a blind eye to this, and almost all the neighbors I am friends with have dogs which gives the place a more communal feel. The walking trails right across Southwestern Blvd are so nice to walk on with my puppy! Really pretty lakes, little bridges, and baby ducklings to feed in the springtime. Lots of joggers and people out walking with their babies.
Our apartment is small but we have a giant patio! Not all of the buildings are like ours, but of course you would never rent an apartment sight unseen. We have chairs and a table out there and it's a nice place to sit at night with neighbors and chat. We had newly-cleaned carpet when we moved in. I have never seen one bug inside that hadn't just flown in through the open door as I walked in. I have never heard our neighbors through the walls. Our electric bill is cheap since the apartment is so small it doesn't take much to heat or cool! Water pressure is fine, although sometimes you will get a flash of hot or cold water if a neighbor flushes their toilet. This is not ideal, but again, these apartments were built in the 1970s and you are not paying much for rent. As mentioned in other posts, they are slated to be torn down and rebuilt within the next several years. The new apartments behind The Corners have just been finished and are really nice, so I'm sure The Corners rebuild will be just as nice when it's finished.
Maybe I am spoiled because my building is right next to one of the laundry rooms, but the only time I've ever had to wait for a machine is on the weekend when everybody is doing their laundry. I've never had any clothes shrunk or otherwise damaged. Maybe a bit damp because the dryers are older, but if you lay it out or hang it up it really doesn't make a difference. And if you're not a total lardbutt you won't mind carrying your own damn clothes up and down your stairs if you live in a 2nd story apartment. Big deal.
I don't use the Country Club often either (even though it's right across the street), but I think it's the LOCATION that makes The Corners worthwhile. You are literally 12 minutes away from downtown Dallas. Cool stuff within a 15 minute drive includes: all the bars and restaurants on Lower Greenville, great Asian food, markets, and hookah bars in north Dallas, Target, a library, several Starbucks, fast food, burrito joints, taquerias, PetSmart and Fish Gallery, White Rock Lake and its dogpark, Half Price Books, Tom Thumb AND Central market are within walking distance, Blockbuster, Greek food, Japanese food, Thai food, Tex Mex, Italian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Taiwanese, BBQ, burger joints, Piggie Pies pizza is awesome ... tons of shopping at the center on Northwest Highway at Preston, and also at the center on Northwest Hwy at Skillman. Northpark mall is literally across the street with tons of couture shopping and a movie theatre. And that's just off the top of my head.
One time I locked myself out of the apartment. I called Smith Security and within 10 minutes an officer met me at the main office. He was very nice and even offered to escort me back to the apartment after he had made me a new key. They literally patrol through the complex a dozen times a day. I feel very safe here as long as I am not a total idiot by not paying attention to my surroundings or leaving valuables in sight in my car. This is just common sense people. Also, a new gate has just been installed on the Shady Brook entrance, it is locked from 11pm-5am daily. You can exit but not get in during these hours without going around to the Southwestern Blvd entrance.
Our complex is mostly younger people and students in their 20s, as well as some retirees. For somebody who doesn't want to spend half of their income on rent and is not ready or able to consider owning a home, this is a perfectly suitable place to live. I have no problem recommending The Corners to people in such a situation who have reasonable expectations on what it means to live in the cheapest complex in The Village.
