I have lived in Covington Pointe Apartments for 9 years now and have enjoyed living here for the most part. They are a smaller community - only 180 units and coordinated activities keep us a close-knit community. I enjoy the wildlife that surrounds us adjacent golf course, and am constantly seeing rabbits, raccoons, possums, squirrels and the most unusual birds make their homes in all the community's trees. This complex is one of the quietest I've ever lived in. We do back up to the rail line, but I live near the front and from my 2nd floor apartment only my dog hears the train rumble by at 4am. The apartments are a nice size, and the large kitchens and separate utility make great use of the space. The assistant manager, Vanessa is a real gem. One call to her and things get done. She is always professional - never says a bad thing about anyone or anything, always has a smile and is the warmest person I have ever dealt with in the apartment industry. Sounds like a nice place, right?
Except for a few MAJOR things Manager is one. There has been a steady stream of managers over the last 7 years. Some last a month, some last a year - often times you can tell who is going to last after meeting them. Hand in hand with the problems with managers here is maintenance. This complex cannot keep maintenance people and the ones they do hire are unskilled and overwhelmed by all the work. My favorite maintenance man threatened to leave for months because of management/corporate not giving him the time, money nor resources to fix the problems with the complex. One of his major gripes was the A/Cs. Last summer he showed me 30 work orders - and these were not Freon refills - they were out and it was 102 degrees outside! After he left we went through a couple till we got this last one, who wasn't bad and was actually getting things done till they micromanaged him, and he left too with a warning that the latest manager will not go to bat with corporate for you.
By and large, the biggest problem with complex is the crime. In the last several years, we've been plagued with car vandalism, theft, car jacking, rape and now a hostage situation. It's really surprising given the fact that we have remote controlled gates and live across Keller Springs from million dollar homes. It started about 5 years ago and has only increased in frequency and violence of the crimes. The police sat a crime watch car in the complex to deter the crime but since then there have been more instances. The latest was advised to us in a letter taped to the front door. From what I read and from what my neighbors have told me a man, who had been making threats to the nearby University on Campbell, was running from the police and just happened to find his way to our office. He took the NEW manager (less than a month on the job) hostage and had to be tear-gassed out. They have a note on the door saying they are temporarily at a nearby complex, but I have left several messages on their voicemail and with the answering service and not gotten a return call.
I have loved living here, but that was the final straw. I don't feel safe to live here. I never felt like I had to be afraid to walk my dog, but after the woman was attacked while getting groceries out of her car and raped, and now this hostage situation, can you blame me?

Wow, have you got your facts wrong. No one was raped and no one was car jacked. Car vandelism and car theft may have occured here but name one freakin apartment complex it hasn't happened on. Open your eyes to reality! We live in a world where crime has no address!!! Check with your local Police Department before you start giving false information. And the new Manager was not held hostage it was the leasing consultant. Yeah the reason no one was returning your calls is probably because the office had to be shut down due to the tear gas that was thrown in and ruined everything. Did you read the same letter I did because it was in plain english that the office would be closed and gave an alternate number to reach the office. They returned all of my calls. It takes time to recover from something like that. Maybe You and your dog need to move to a world where you are guaranteed safety, let me know when you find it. LOL

No, actually I DON'T have my facts wrong. There was a woman attacked up near the front of the complex in early 2007. From what THE MANAGER told me, the assailant jumped over the concrete wall and ran up to her as she was getting into her car. Not only that but it happened in broad daylight during the week. The police were still there when I arrived that evening. The woman moved out shortly thereafter. All of this information came from management. Why would they lie about this? Also, I know the person who was car jacked personaly, and am very familiar with the case and circumstances around it. The police questioned me about unknown persons seen in the area. NOW, I am wondering what motive YOU have to deny this. Look, the complex got so bad at one point that they had a manned police car stationed inside the gate for months so that residents would feel safe. No one does. They also installed an emergency phone on a pole over by the 2nd pool, but it was stolen. MOVE NOW, before you regret it.
