Avoid these apartments

I finally got out of this apartment after a year. From day one I knew it was a mistake to move here, so I'm going to try and give an honest and objective review.

My biggest complaint had to do with my rent. I had originally agreed to a one year lease with rent for my one bedroom apartment being about $750/mo. I had an appointment to sign my lease a few days before move in. At that meeting the same leasing agent claimed that my rent was now $10 more per month. When I showed her the paper signed by a management representative with the original rent she claimed that that price was for a different apartment even though the apartment number was on the sheet. I paid the $10 more, because I felt stuck, but in the future I will always sign the actual lease with enough time to find another place to live if they try to pull this scam. Management had also changed their copy of the signed document.

The other problem I had was the "annual fire alarm/sprinkler system check." In January they started this check. You would receive a notice the week that your apartment was to be checked, telling you to secure pets, etc. They could not give a specific day, just a five day period in which your apartment might be checked. Then you would get several notices because they wouldn't actually get to your apartment that week. Well this check happened twice. The second time they came to inspect my apartment I told them they had already checked it. Then I find out the first inspection was actually people looking to buy the property, although that was never disclosed, and I had been under the impression they were check the sprinkler system. They also sounded the fire alarms off and on for hours at a time several different days. When I moved out these "annual inspections" had been going on for five months.

Parking: For the majority of apartments the only option for parking is the parking garage. Depending on the time that you get home you may not have a parking space anywhere near your apartment. For a period of time it was almost impossible to find a space on my level; I assume others were having the same problem because management was "kind enough" to send out notices offering reserved spaces for $30 per month. Also, the gates often wouldn't open, forcing you to back up onto busy Gaston Ave. Other times the gates were open for days, even weeks at a time.

Noise level: I could hear my upstairs neighbor's every move. Bus stops, traffic from Gaston Ave, the fire station across the street, if you want peace and quiet, this is definitely not the place for you.

Grounds: The only nice thing about these apartments is the appearance. The grounds are kept very nice. The only problem I can think of is the trash. There is a trash chute in the parking garage, and it piles up on the lower level. Most apartments in this price range/area offer door to door trash pick up.

Safety: I did not feel safe here. Homeless people often wander around outside the complex. I know some people had there cars broken into from notices sent out, but I was very careful, and nothing ever happened to me personally. For a short time they had security guards patrol at night, but as of the time I moved I had not seen them in months.

Construction: These apartments are poorly built, basically just thrown together. Although they look nice at first glance, when you actually move in you realize how cheap they are. Everything is plastic-countertops, faucets, bathtubs. Ants were a problem almost my entire stay. Every single crumb had to be wiped up from the counters to keep them away.

Maintenance: the one problem I asked management to fix was fixed the next day correctly.

Office staff: Typical. Not at all friendly, except to those who are looking to lease. I was threatened with fines for not paying $1 and change that I didn't even know about and couldn't have known about.
