The people working in the office never went out of their way for 'special' circumstances, like most places would. They were always a pain to deal with.

If by "special" circumstances you a re referring to extra time paying rent, skipping a month, etc then you clearly don't understand that what they have to do for one person they have to do for the next.
There are no "special" circumstances anywhere you go. It's a business.
You can't buy a house and expect them to let you default on a month's payment because you lost your job, etc. They'd have to do it for everyone else.
Use common sense.
