My Story

From: -Anonymous-

Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2006

I posted earlier about the flooding problems. This is the entire story of why I moved from there.

My roommate and I needed a place ASAP, so this was the quick fix to our housing problem. They were cheaper than every where else, had "mostly" updated the apartment, and it was in a good location to our jobs. Plus, the current manager at the time so was very caring and really did a great job managing the apartment. They have since gotten a new manager. So we signed a lease and moved in. Not two days after we moved, my roommate's car was broken into, and his radio stolen. He didn't have a factory brand stereo, so if you have something custom in your car, beware of this area. While there, his car was broken into every 4 months. He also had the lighted covered parking, so that does no good. There are security cameras, but they didn't work.

During the course of the year we lived there, my room flooded a grand total of 6 times, see previous comment for more details. Each time, managment did come and help dry out my room and capet, but the problem kept happening. After complaining so many times, management finally took action and dug the equivalant to a moat outside my side of the building to divert the water to a very large drain in the parking lot. This reduced the flooding problem, but still didn't fix it entirely. When the crazy flash flood happened back in March of 2006, the parking lot was flash flooded, and the water got so high, my car flooded. While you can't really prevent a flash flood, it is still a problem. The flash flood flooded almost every apartment on the ground floor, and ruined many people's entire apartments.

I moved out about a month before our lease was up. My roommate stayed until the lease ended, and told me, before he had even turned in the key, when the place was still technically ours, they had already rented it, and given someone else a key. He walked into our place two days before we had to be out, and someone else had already moved all their stuff in. Also, the manager was giving tours of the place, without our permission, to potential renters while we were at work.

If you are looking for a cheap apartment that looks half way decent in a more run down area, this place is good. It is really close to downtown, took me 10 mins to get to work, and it is close to Cedar Springs nightlife. I would do 2nd floor if at all possible to avoid flooding, and and never leave anything in your car. Managment was responsive to our problems, but never truely fixed them. I guess there is only so much lipstick you can put on a pig.
