When I first moved here in July, Surrey Row looked appealing - very cheap, big apartments. I got a 1 bedroom with study for $505 a month with free covered parking.
Little did I know that what you save in money, you more than make up for in stress.
First night sleeping in my 2nd floor apartment there was a group of teenagers climbing on the covered parking, breaking bottles, and screaming at the top of their lungs at TWO AM.
There are panhandlers EVERYWHERE in this complex. People who will try to sell you weed, illegal cable, or just simply ask you for money "for bus fare". It is impossible to walk through the complex without getting asked at least once.
Parking is horrible! The free covered parking I received was nowhere near my apartment. My inspection was out for a couple of months, and I got my car towed from right in front of my apartment with no notice.
On average I hear at least one gunshot per week. Just down the street I've seen people lying dead face-down on the pavement. A friend of mine was walking through the apt complex across the street, and was hit in the head with a beer bottle by a guy sneaking behind him, who then proceeded to steal his wallet. Not to mention, I've heard of three separate break-ins. One where a guy was robbed blind - EVERYTHING in the apartment...including his DOG, for god's sake. One right next door to my apartment!
Many of the outdoor light fixtures don't work. They will turn off and on depending on how hard you slam your door. My apartment has extensive water damage on the walls that gets worse every times it rains. There is a major roach problem in my apartment; no matter how hard I try to get rid of them, they just get worse and worse.
Management has had two regime changes since I've lived here for 10 months. The new management is OK, better than the last. But they still have problems with paperwork, i.e. personally receiving and signing your rent money order, but still giving you an eviction notice for non-payment.
To be fair, the grounds are VERY nice. Beautiful trees, nice-looking apartments, and the pool is actually pretty nice. From the outside, if you came during a certain time of day, you might think these apartments are actually livable.
Basically, I would not recommend this complex to anyone. In fact, I am of the mind it should be boarded up and just closed forever - just like the one across the street did.
