New money hungry owners take over

I've lived at Deerwood in a two bedroom apartment for about four years now. For the most part, this place is not the worst I've experienced. However, since the property was sold very recently, the new owners have decided to raise rent prices by over $100! (For ALL units!) Unfortunately, I'm having to move once my lease is up because of this. These apartments are definitely NOT better than average, and in my opinion are NOT worth what they are asking residents to pay. By moving into this complex you are simply paying for a convenient location in the middle of Deer Park, close to the Post Office and a local park within walking distance. Honestly, you could rent a nicer apartment of better quality in the Clear Lake or League City area for these prices! (In a nicer area, closer to entertainment, restaurants, and medical centers!)
Also, if you choose to live here, make sure the tags on your vehicle (inspection and registration) are up to date or management will leave a note warning that your car will be towed if you do not correct the tags shorty after notice. They actually do enforce this too, as I've already had my car towed once. You'd think they would give people at least a few days or so to take care of this, but that is not the case here. Do your laundry at a friend or family member's home if you can. (Unless you have a washer/dryer in your apartment.) The laundry facilities here are gross, and not kept up at all. The machines do not work properly, and residents are allowed to smoke in there! Prices as of 12-8-07 are $1.00 per load to wash, and $1.00 per load to dry!
I'd understand paying the insane prices they're asking, if they upgraded appliances in all rooms, and put in better quality carpeting and flooring. Please look elsewhere to get more for your buck! Rent goes up, but our paychecks don't get bigger... Management doesn't care because it's our money in their pockets.

I totally agree with the entire assessment of the new owners. My lease was up at the end of Nov 2007. By law, as stated in the lease, the complex is required to give 45 days prior written notice if the rent is going to increase at the end of the lease. How many days did I get? 14. That's right 14 days. The way they went around getting sued, because the new ownership is nothing but lawyers, is they moved back the start of my new lease to Jan 1 and let me go month to month for December's rent. So in essence they gave themselves the 45 day notice by backing my lease up to Jan 1. I'm not a millionaire, otherwise I wouldn't live here, so there's nothing I could do in 14 days much less sue the bastards for breach of contract.
The woman in the office, Amy is a douche! Her only response to the whole sitation was to site the new ownership take over the new computer system, etc. etc. She basically told me that I'm lucky that the prices didn't get raised any higher because the apartment is actually worth $745. NO! Its not. The carpet is old. There's mold in the fiberglass duct work. The faucets leak. The appliances are crap. The peel and stick tile floor is crap. Its worth the $615 I was paying for a two bedroom, but not $745! Here's the thing, in the state of Texas there are no rent control laws. The property manager, the new manager, sets the rent with no detriment from the state. They can basically charge me $2000 a month for the same apartment with no sanctions from the state saying that's too high. So basically what management told me was that I should be happy they didn't stick it to me harder than they could have.
I'm moving at the end of my lease. I can't stand these new people. And to top it all off, they're painting the apartment salmon pink, olive green, and goldenrod yellow. Yes! 70's colors. And management thinks is cute! They suck!

I agree aout the paint, it is very ugly. I had not heard about the rent increase, I guess when my lease is up I will in which case I guess I will be moving also. My 2 bed room is hardly worth what I pay now and surely not a penny more. I mean hello it doesnt even have washer/dryer connections!!!! The water has been mysteriously "not working" more than 3 times in the last 3 months and WOW I feel lucky if I go a week with the hot water working everyday. The office staff is less than helpful. My "new" mail box wont even lock and maintenance's way of fixing it was to beat on it with a hammer chipping off the finish and damaging the edges! For the most part I was happy at first until you actually have time to see all the flaws...that apprently now we have to pay more rent for....
