I have lived in Oaklawn Gardens for almost two years now. When I first moved in, I thought things were going to be fine. Then management changed. I lived in a one bedroom at first. My heating and airconditioning did not work. Also my house was infested with cockroaches, a problem that never went away. When I would cook on my stove, they would fall into my cooking pots when I opened the cabinets above the venthoods. The walls are very thin here, the glass is so thin and the windows and doors do not fit into their frames, so air gets in and out, making utility bills very high. I live alone and I pay an average of 100 a month to utilities.
When asked to fix my heater, I as well was told that it worked just fine. But the temp. was unbearable. Kept my thermostat on 60,but the house never got below 90. In the winter, their was a quarter inch layer of ice on the INSIDE of my window. Having realized their mistake, they moved me into another apartment. Maintenece told me that when they opened up the vent hood to my heat/air unit there were holes in the drywall that were over a foot in diamater. For almost a year I had been paying upwards of 150 a month to heat and air condition the roofing system of 8 units. Also there was a dead mouse fried to some substatial part of the system which could have been causing malfunctioning (also could account for the smell). So I mived into another apartment.
My neighbors are noisy. The people that lived downstairs from me had three non-neutered male cats and two dogs. The smell of urine came up through my floor and into my house, into my closet where I keep my clothes and into my bathrooms and bedrooms. It came up through my drains and into my kitchen. It made my house feel unclean and it made me embarassed to have friends or family come to visit.
My former next door neighbor was a chain smoker and when she moved out the apartment was sick smelling, they changed the carpet, but did not change the padding before new tenants moved in.
I have been told by reliable sources (former workers), but not experienced myself, that if the staff feels your apartment in dirty, they will come in and "clean it for you."
These people have no repect for their tenants, they honestly do not care about the people living in their apartments. In the past 5 months we have had 3 break-ins in the parking lot, people had everything stolen from their vehicles, one man over 10,000 dollars worth of tools for his business. They have done nothing to secure the parking, they have not added extra lighting, they do not have maintenece people living on the property.
The staff is extremely rude and unhelpful.

At first I thought it would be a wonderful place to live, close to school, decent rent, the staff seemed nice, good neighbors, etc.

Boy, was I wrong.

Get as far away from Oaklawn leasing as you possibly can.
