Problems Galore

I am still living at Brentwood Terrace Apartments but its only because I am on a very tight income with no other place to live at. However, I do want to make people aware of what it is they are entering into when they sign a lease with this apartment complex. My advise is to not move into this apartment unless you are willing to put up with alot of BS from the apartment complex and unless you absolutely do not have any other choice. For a few dollars more each month you can find other much better apartments then this one provided that your budget allows you to do so.

Anyhow, to start off, I have been living here several years and this is the re-occuring problems in which I have noticed each and every year and often occurring over and over.

1. Every year, during the summer time, you can almost expect for certain for your air conditioning to go out at least once which will make your apartment feel like its 100 degree?s inside it. If you have pets in which are going to be living at the apartment with you, make sure you leave plenty of water out for them in the event this should happen and be sure to buy yourself a window unit or some portable fan (which won?t help much at all). The window unit is probably going to be your most reliable and safe bet if you intend to be living here during the summer months and for a long time. Also, the air conditioning and heating is a one track system meaning they have to switch your system from air conditioning to heating in the winter season, and from heating to air conditioning in the summer season. They do not usually turn on the air conditioning till July usually just so you know. Also they usually don?t turn on the heating till November. They supposedly do this to keep electricity usage down. Last but not least, when the air conditioner breaks down, it usually takes several days for it to get fixed. When one apartment is without air conditioning, just know your not alone because everyone else is going through the same thing as you. However, walk down to the office and you will find that its cool as an ice box.

2. You have to pay for your utilities here and its not all bills paid. The bad thing about this, is that you do not pay for what you use, but what they do is total up what everyone in your unit uses and then divide that by the number of apartment rooms in use and then pass the bill along to you meaning you might actually end up paying more then you use. Your utility bill comes from Brentwood Terrace Apartments and not from your local utility company. Furthermore, you will realize that typically a one bedroom apartment might have as many as 5 people living in it. Have fun paying for then you use.

3. There is a serious roach problem in all the apartments and no roach bait or treatment is going to take care of the problem because the roaches will simply go next door and return again later. What you will need to do is seal up all cracks and exposed gaps in your entire apartment dwelling in which can be found behind your oven, refrigerate and in the food closet. You will need to remove the shelves in your food closet and get in there and look around the edges of the door on the inside to see the exposed gaps. You will also need to put insulating foam around all pipes under the sink and caulk all cracks in your apartment which will generally cost you $50.00 in supplies and you must do this all yourself unless you want to wait an enternity for the maintenance crew to come out and do it for you which then they will do a half-ass job of it.

4. Noise is a serious problem with people being inconsiderate of their neighbors or other people in their apartments at night. You will often hear Mexican music playing at night time hours in the distance or some car driving by playing that music up loud as they can play it. Furthermore, if you will hear the occassional sirens of police cars and etc. driving by at all hours as well as freight trucks from the highway.

5. Getting something fix can take forever to get done no matter how important it may be, you can expect a good week to two weeks to go by before you actually have anything done. It would be probably best to simply do it yourself.

6. If you stay here long enough, you will notice people do not live here very long because they soon realize all of these problems for themselves and move out right away once their lease is up. I have lived here 3 years almost now and apartment below me has had 4 different families move in and out of it.

7. Parking is hard to find especially late at night due to people visiting late at nights, and due to taxi?s and people from the bar across the street parking here. Be prepared to park a good ways away from your apartment late at night and do some long walking to your apartment. Also I have had the back windshield busted out in my truck since I?ve been here once and for what reason I do not know.

8. The apartment management / staff team are inconsiderate people who do not show a geniune concern for their residents. I had actually had one of the people in the office say to me on the phone "I don?t mean to sound like a horses ass, but....", which is very unprofessional and rude. You can ask them to return your phone call and they won?t do it even when you walk down there personally and tell them you want them to start returning your phone calls and then a week or two later you make another phone call requesting that your call be returned only for them to ignore your request and instructions altogether.

9. You will find that the dumpsters are always full with furniture from people who are moving out which is a common sight.

10. You seldom recieve any notifications when anyone is coming to your apartment and sometimes will have maintenance people walk in on you or the guy who comes around to kill bugs every now and then. Therefore there is no privacy in your own apartment because staff and etc. can simply walk in on you when your not dressed at any time unexpectingly.

11. You will find that water is turned off and on several times through out the year for several hours at a time. You will also find that the hot water heater goes out several times in a course of a year which often doesn?t get fixed for several days.

12. When you first move in, you can pretty much rest assured your utility is going to be pretty cheap for the first few months, but it eventually goes up to $100.00 (thats the max for a one bedroom apartment as of right now) . Also you will get your utility statement and you will get the nice words of "Estimated" and "Due Upon Receipt" and so therefore you don?t get your detailed usage when it comes to utilities like you would if it came from your local utility company.

13. The pool I wouldn?t dare even think of going swimming in, because of the bad quality of water in which exists in it. I am not kidding either.

14. Half of the washing machines and driers are broken and cost you an arm and a leg to use only to usually have it take your money or it get jammed in the coin slot.

15. Half of the mail boxes have missing locks and etc. and thus people can easily just come in and take your mail and etc. without you knowing.

16. There is grafitti on the side of some apartment buildings and gang violence around here is pretty common. Bunch of criminals and illegal immigrants live here at this apartment complex, so please, if you have kids, try and keep them away from strangers.
