Top 10 reasons not to rent here
From: -Anonymous-Date posted: 2/16/2008
Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2008
1. Unbelievable rent increases. The rent on a 1-bedroom went up from the $700s to the $900s in the space of three years. Yes, I have to move because of the increase. The spiraling rent is probably at least partly driven by the complex's location just north of the medical district.
2. Rats. I had two rats on my 4th-floor balcony eating my potted plants, then had one in my pantry eating my food. I've also had problems with ants, silverfish and carpet beetles.
3. Noisy young (and apparently deaf) people. The management insisted that no "college types" would be living here, but every weekend there are the inevitably loud, shrieking women coming in from the parking garage and stomping through the breezeways in their clunky high heels. Maybe I'm just getting old (I'm in my 40s) but I could do without that at 2 and 3 in the morning.
4. Noisy neighbors. Every time somebody shuts a door (or slams it, more like) the pictures hanging on my wall go sideways.
5. They decided just as I was moving in to lay new tile on top of the old tile, and glue has been oozing out of the gaps ever since, causing both the kitchen and bathroom floors to look disgusting even when they're clean. I've asked repeatedly for a repair and it's never done well enough.
6. Cigarette smoke. My downstairs neighbor's smoking went right up through my windows.
7. Electric bills. There is no insulation to speak of, so cooling and heating bills are astronomical. In addition, 4th-floor units have the heating/cooling machinery basically in the attic above them. If the machines are on, you'll hear them.
8. Insecure. This is a gated community, but I've often found the gates left wide open at night.
9. Maintenance (or lack thereof). My front door looks like it's been kicked in, and it's split vertically, but the maintenance people's solution was to glue it together rather than replace the door. I had a leaky dining room window for months before I contacted corporate and got their butts in gear. And recently the attic door collapsed into my closet, spraying chalk and insulation all over my clothes, and it never was fixed to my satisfaction.
10. There is no recycling program here. I asked for one and was told it was too expensive.
Believe me, I could go on. But this is the top ten reasons why you should not live here.
