READ your lease carefully and beware!

I lived at Solarium for a year. The place seemed ok at first, but we experienced a range of problems.
First of all I have rented in major cities across the country and this has to be one of the most difficult I have encountered. I pay rent in full on time every month. I am quiet and clean and keep to myself. Is it so much to expect that from the community I rent from'
Soon after we moved in our brand new car was broken into and stolen along with other residents items. Thankfully we had great insurance coverage, but where was the security patrol we were told lived on site'
During the time we were there, maintenance requests were either slow or ignored. The complex is not open on weekends at all either.
Note: the A/C units are old and so are the appliances and water heater - they are hell on the power and both the A/C and water heater had to be repaired. The A/C is very loud and rattles outside the master bedroom. The kitchen countertops were painted over with latex paint rather than repaired properly or replaced. I couldn't find drip pans anywhere for the stove that was so old. This was most definitely nothing like the apartment we viewed before signing the lease.
Someone broke the window from the outside and instead of replacing like I was told would be done, they attempted to seal it (didn't do a very good job) and left it that way for several months until we moved out. My kids room was very cold during this time and i am sure it didn't help the energy costs.
As for noise level, brace yourself! Lots of noises from the highway and amblances are to be expected, but quite often there are extremely loud neighbors. Several times we were awakened in the middle of the night by domestic squabbles or loud partiers in the parking lot or walkways. Again, complex was informed but did little about it. It really sucks when you have to work early or have kids.
The biggest surprise was that when we gave our written notice and paid we were told that we could prorate a couple days at the increased rent. We paid for that so we could move over a weekend. Come to find out they are demanding that we pay the remaining months rent and a re-letting fee - even though the lease was over. Moral to that story is never rely on the apartment representatives for information. We thought we had cleared it all and knew what we had to pay based on the manager's information. We were wrong to rely on that apparently.
If you are from out of town, military, relocating with the big employer here ... please consider looking elsewhere and save yourself from the nightmare.
