Great apartment for students, others should think twice

I'm torn about this review. For one, the other reviewers are right. You cannot get an apartment this nice in this neighborhood for less money. You can get close if there's availability down Kirby at 7575 or Kirby Place, but the building are a little older. Just don't expect the level of service that generally comes along with apartments that look like these, and, in particular, don't expect much when it comes to the level of maturity of the other residents.

When I first moved in, my neighbors were great, the apartment was great, but the management was a total nightmare - see some of the older reviews for comments about that.

A few months before we moved out, the management changed and I expected things to get better. They did, in some ways. The new management is relatively more professional, and I feel for them considering the situation they came into - take, for example, the parking situation. They had to do an audit of all the parking spaces because nobody had an reliable record of what spots were assigned to what residents.

On the other hand, the character of the building has completely switched over. When I first moved in, the building was full of professionals, families, and some older single people. Now, there are more than a few students living in the building, and it shows. I never had problems with my neighbors for the first part of my lease, but toward the end, things got hairy. You may have read about the parking situation - all the exterior spots are not entirely covered and leave half of your car hanging out underneath the balconies above. Shouldn't be much of a problem, unless your drunk neighbors downstairs decide to throw flower pots off their balcony in the middle of the afternoon. I wouldn't say they were aiming for my car in particular, as I had never met them, but they did cause damage to my paint. I had to call the cops to deal with the situation, since they slammed the door in my face when I tried to speak with them, and refused to stop throwing the pots, even when told they were damaging my car. Later on, one of my 4th floor neighbors threw a party, and a guest had a little too much to drink and threw up in the hallway right in front of my door. Not to be too graphic, but there's throwing up, and then there's leaving the biggest pile of vomit I have ever seen, calling fellow party goers out into the hallway to take pictures of the enormous pile of vomit, and sexually harassing a fellow neighbor who had the temerity to suggest that they clean it up (not me, I wasn't awake at the time - this is what I've heard from management). This was really my biggest problem with management - the vomiting incident occurred on Saturday night, and Lola flatly refused to have anyone come clean it up until late Monday afternoon. I eventually had to file a complaint with the city, and their representative was as appalled as I was. When I was down in the office complaining about that situation, a fellow neighbor was discussing the girls in the apartment over her that were hanging over their balcony railing, topless, which she thought was a little inappropriate for her young children.

So basically, my opinion is that the apartment is worth it if you're willing to roll the dice. If you don't have any problems, great, but if you do, they are not going to be dealt with in an appropriate fashion. On the other hand, if you're a student looking for a place where you can throw loud parties and don't might the level of service that traditionally accompanies student complexes, this place is probably perfect for you. I definitely would have loved it when I was a student - my husband and I are just a little past wanting to deal with all that now, and ultimately decided that the Gramercy was not for us.

I should also mention, though, that they were completely reasonable about all move-out issues, and refunded a reasonable portion of our deposit without any hassle whatsoever.
