In a nutshell, you get what you pay for. Here are some things about my apartment that I didn't discover until I was stuck with a year lease. If I had known some of these things sooner, I never would have rented here: 1. There is no water pressure in the sinks, especially in the summer. What's worse, the toilets barely flush! My toilet struggles to handle anything more substantial than water, if you know what I mean. Quite annoying and disgusting. 3. Oddly, my bathroom counter top was white when I moved in, but within days the white began to chip away as though someone had painted the countertop with white paint! Now, after almost a year, it looks awful and cheap. 2. The drains in the kitchen and bathroom are always sluggish, even after maintenance has supposedly "fixed" them. When I shower, I end up standing ankle-deep in water. 3. The water pipes leak--more than once the ceiling has begun to sag in my bathroom because water was leaking from the shower in the apartment upstairs. Maintenance had to re-plaster the ceiling. 4. The floors and ceilings are thin and you can hear everything above and below you. 5. Horribly insulated--I can feel cold or hot air coming in under the front door like it's open. Not surprisingly, my electric bills are astronomical when the heat or air conditioning is running regularly. 5. In my building there are walkways directly in front of the living room windows, no matter what floor you're on. Unless you want a constant stream of people walking three inches from your window and gawking into your living room as they pass, you always have to keep your blinds shut. This gives my apartment a perpetual dark, dingy feeling and makes me feel claustrophobic. If you like natural light and being able to look out your windows, this isn't the place for you! 6. The exterior looks better than the interior. The decor is like a 70's flashback (some units are worse than others), but the model they show you looks new. Make sure you look at the actual apartment you'll be renting, because chances are very good it won't look anything like the model. 7. The laundry facilities are very inconvenient--way too far away from most of the apartments. Several buildings share one freestanding laundry building in the middle of the parking lot. 8. No guest parking, and very limited street parking in the evenings.
On the plus side, the management has been nice, the pool is well maintainted, and the courtyards are pretty. While Allen House is cheap for the location and the size of the units, for me the low price is definitely not worth the hassles and run-down condition of my apartment. I'm counting the days til my lease is up!

It sounds like you're talking about Bayou Park Village apartments. Though I agree that there are many things that are negative about the Allen House, it is a good place to stay for a year or two.
