Tarnished Reputation

I have been a resident of Allen House for over a year and have enjoyed my stay until recently. The day after we signed our lease they made the announcement about tearing down all of the buildings except 3. Fortunately ours was not going to be torn down in the first phase, but that has led to a change in the type of people living here.
Allen House had the reputation as a younger up and coming professional crowd trying to establish themselves in Houston. Today as I walked in, I walked by about 6 Indian children and 2 mothers playing in the entrance way. Not really a big problem, but on the occassional morning I get to sleep in it sounds like a carnival in India with children running around and screaming.
Within the last 2 months it feels as if I have moved to an apartment complex in the middle of Mumbai. Besides the fact that the children are loud and not being controlled, the parents make you feel as if you don't belong. Nobody says hello or even smiles at you, which was pretty commonplace a few months ago, and god forbid you have a dog as everyone runs and screams when they see the beast on a leash.
I am glad my lease is ending fairly soon and I will be able to move to an area where English is spoken by a majority of people.
(This review does not include any information regarding problems with my apartment, but if you have any questions, please let me know, and I will make an additional post.)

Thanks for the info. Couple of Q's if you're willing. 1) Are they still leasing with all the renovations? 2) What's the deal with the shuttle I hear so much about? I'm interested because I am moving to Houston with my wife who cannot drive (short story: we lived in Europe), so it would be great for her to have a way to get around the first couple of months while I'm at work. Many thanks.

1. Yes they are still leasing.
2. I do not know of a shuttle, but there is a bus stop close by. You are also close to everything that you need (grocery, restaurants, entertainment, etc.)

Why the heck does it matter what race the loud people are? Couldn't you just have said that the apartment residents are noisy? I'm a little offended and I'm not even Indian...or from "Mombai". Perhaps you should consider revising your post. Just a suggestion...

I had the same experience you did. There was a family living above me and next to me on both sides who would get together and stomp and have screaming kids until about 3 a.m. literally every other nights. It was only after a month of complaining that the management tried, reluctantly and unsuccessfully, to solve the problem. I was surprised by the number of extremely rude Indian residents, and most I've met are great people. These residents are utterly insensitive and probably feel that they are doing nothing wrong, as in Indian, the dense population makes for a lack of privacy and quietness. I personally feel that paying $800 on my own for rent every month entitles me to no be awakened numerous times in the night by unbelievably loud noise from the side or above. I would STRONGLY discourage others from renting here.

How is the safety around the neighborhood? How far is the Light RAIL? I am planning on moving to Houston in the first week of October find this building to be of interest. Thanks.

The neighborhood Allen House is in is safe...at least, I've never had any issues here in the 2 years or so I've been living here. The light rail is about 2-3 miles away, downtown. There is a bus line that can take you to it in about 15 minutes...however, in Houston, the light rail doesn't go very far...from downtown to the Medical District/Texans Stadium and back is about it.

I just moved to Allen House a few weeks ago from out of state. I didn't know anyone but my neighbors helped me get furniture and get acquainted with my surroundings. It's great being so close to downtown and walking distance to all of the stores/restaurants that I need. The park is close. The buildings are quiet, clean and protected. I enjoy being here and would recommend to anyone relocating from Houston.

Out and out racist comments. I would think twice before renting here, not because of loud "-------" but because of the racist renters, presumably americans. Apparently noise is not an issue, what language the noise is in, is the issue.
