They had the courtesy to tell us when someone was mugged in the parking lot in the evening, as well as when multiple apartments were broken into (note: these both happened within the same week). They placed notices on the doors of everybody's apartments, which was a bit unsettling but good to know for the future. As such, I took the proper precautions -- I made sure to keep my door locked at all times, and avoided walking around the parking lot after dark.
However, they, for whatever reason, failed to inform us when multiple vehicles were broken into in early March. Guess what -- Yeah, my car was broken into, as were the vehicles of about 6-7 other people in our complex. Broken windows, stolen electronics... hell, I had a lot of paperwork from my company stolen (no idea why) which is now preventing me from doing my job. If they told me we had thieves breaking into cars, would I have been a bit more cautions (taking my paperwork/CD player faceplate/etc. out of my car) -- Absolutely. They didn't, and now I'm out about $600 in repairs & stolen goods because of them trying to keep the original burglaries under wraps. And the best part -- they haven't told the community about the latest break-ins either. So this will likely continue. They don't put any more money into the security of their residents (their excuse: "We're talking to our corporate office, but they won't give us a bigger budget for it"), which will ultimately cause this place to lose the confidence of everybody living in the area.
I realize this isn't the safest area of Houston -- hey, that's my fault for not doing more research before moving from so far away -- but the least they can do is try to make it safer. They don't have to dump hundreds of thousands of dollars into new gates and a small army of armed guards, but a nightly patrolman or two can make a world of difference for a minimal cost.

def true! I had heard that people's vehicles were broken into and waited to get a letter from them but never recieved anything. What makes me even more mad is that they cannot get a big enough budget for security yet they can afford spa nights every month, free breakfasts and dinners every week for the complex.
