Save Your Money, Rent Elsewhere

This place really only is about location, location, location. I completely agree with a previous review entitled "The Staff Smiles at You While They Screw You." We lived in the Camden Midtown community for two years despite the ridiculously high rent because of the convenience of the location to our jobs. In retrospect, it was not worth the price, especially given the many problems we had with the staff who are concerned more about the money than about their residents.

Crime in this area is bad, we frequently get notices of apartments and cars in our garage that were broken into. This could be partly because the garage gate was frequently broken. Rather than install cameras or increase security, the solution was to require all residents to have renters insurance, which does nothing to address our concerns about our personal security while our homes are being broken into. The complex also instituted a strict towing policy of nonresident cars, which was nice, except for the fact that residents at times would sit in their cars in the morning for twenty minutes as we waited for the tow trucks to maneuver in the narrow garage and caused us to be late to work. Packages at the leasing office were not properly logged, so when I tracked my packages as delivered, the office told me it never received them, and later went into their storage closet to find that yes, they had been delivered.

The staff could care less about loyal renters. When it came time for lease renewal, along with a hefty rate increase, we decided to move. The staff gave us different renewal rates, one much higher than the other and were rude when we requested the lower rates we'd been promised by another associate who offered to match the price we'd found at another apartment. Against our better judgment, we renewed again for the location despite the rude staff and the fact that they did not seem to care whether we stayed.

At one point midway through our lease, we received notice that we would be incurring a penalty for keeping a pet against our leasing agreement. My roommate is allergic to animals, so we don't have any pets. When I called the leasing office to see what this was about, they said they had done some kind of walk through of our apartment and saw "evidence of a pet" (but, of course, no pet). I welcomed them to come back to my apartment and look around because there were no pets there, to which they responded they would have to do another random walk through at a later date to be sure there were no pets. Issues of privacy invasion aside, the whole issue was ridiculous and a waste of our time.

When it was time to move out, we spent many hours cleaning and scrubbing our apartment. While we expected to incur some minor charges because of some of the stains we could not get out after two years of normal wear and tear, we later received notice that $300 of our $500 security deposit would not be refunded due to "cleaning charges." The itemized invoice charged us for countless items that we had spent the most time cleaning and know that we left pristine. When I spoke with the manager, we were told that nothing could be done at that point and no additional charges would be refunded. We might as well have not lifted a finger to clean. I guess this is how they treat the people who no longer live there. This was just a fitting ending to two years of maintenance problems, helpless staff, and exorbitant prices.

Even with the great location to downtown and major freeways, I would not recommend this community to anyone. Save your money and your stress level and check out a different complex.
