Nice Apartments close to the Medical Center

I have lived at the Greenbriar for a year and a half, and overall, I would recommend renting here if you are looking for a decent apartment in the Medical Center area. On the plus side, it is a well-maintained complex, the office staff are friendly and helpful, and maintenance has usually been prompt. Drawbacks are parking and price (this is a good price for an apartment in this area with a washer and dryer, but cheaper apartments can be found farther from the Medical Center).

Parking: If you don't have an assigned parking spot (for which you pay extra) and you don't live close to the parking garage, then you will be hauling your groceries halfway across the complex when there isn't a space close to your building. If you come home later in the evening, you may be parking in the parking deck because all the other spaces are taken. Management tried to address this issue last year by requiring all visitors to park in the parking deck instead of the uncovered parking, so if you live a the front of the complex, your visitors will have a lot of walking to do!

Noise: Most of my neighbors, even those with small children, are fairly quiet, so I haven't had too many problems with noise. I can hear the tenants upstairs walking around, and I can hear conversations on the landing outside my door. The metro rail (on the Braeswood side of the complex) can be very loud, so if you are sensitive to noise, look for an apartment on the opposite side of the complex (by the bayou).

Grounds: Well maintained; the area around the pool and club house is very pretty. Most of the damage from Ike has been repaired.

Safety: As a single woman, I feel safe in this complex. That said, this is Houston, and I wouldn't leave my apartment (or car) door unlocked, or leave anything valuable in the car. I heard of one incident early last year where a windshield was smashed in a car in the parking garage.

Construction: The floor plans are very nice and the high ceilings make the apartments feel spacious. The complex is currently undergoing renovation, and if the renovated club house/leasing office is any indication, the updated units are probably very pretty. The older units have kitchen and bathroom cabinets dating from the 80s, and some of the cabinet coatings are starting to peel off, so they can look a little shabby. Having a washer and dryer in the unit is a definite plus.

Maintenance: The maintenance staff is friendly and work requests are usually handled promptly. I have had good luck getting maintenance done when I stopped by the office or called the office; I have not been able to get the online service request form to work. I have not had a problem with bugs besides a few small spiders and silverfish.

Staff: The office staff is friendly and professional; at least one is also a resident of the complex. The office is well staffed Monday through Friday. On the weekends, there is usually only one person working, so there can be a long wait.

Miscellaneous: The Valet trash service is great - put your bagged trash outside your door between 6 and 8 pm Sunday through Thursday, and it is picked up (between 8 and 10 pm). Unfortunately, some of your neighbors will never figure this out, and trash bags left out on Friday night are often attacked by stray cats before the Sunday pick-up. This happens on the second floor, not just first floor.

Overall, while there are some things that could be improved, I would recommend this complex as a good place to live in the medical center area.
