The Houston House High-rise is a great place for someone who likes to live and work downtown. With the completion of the Metro LightRail the ease of commuting to the Medical Center and to the University of Houston-Downtown is made much more convenient. The hidden advantages include a garage parking space (which can average $100 a month in downtown), no electric bill, a 24-hour concierge, and ample balcony space.
Those looking at higher priced lofts should inquire with the management about larger apartments here --- as I have visited several units that were renovated to include two (or more') units into a large one.
Common complaints usually stem from the fact that the building - built in 1963 - has an aging wiring and plumbing infrastructure. However in my experience, I never had a situation that prevented any daily routine.
The management and staff are very friendly and quick to respond to any needs of the residents.

"I never had a situation that prevented any daily routine" REDICULOUS. The water is turned off once a week. Water leaks have soaked the carpet and bathroom ceiling resulting in mildew 3 times. Maintenance responded once replacing a portion of the carpet. In 3 years the air filters have been changed once. If you have a car or friends with cars you can expect to be towed and ticketed regularly. The elevators are constantly broken, often one elevator services the entire building(30 floors). If you don't have 10-15 minutes to wait for an elevator on any given day, stay away. |

I ended up living there for 5 years total, and in the end they gave me a $650 cleanup bill. WTF? I left the place spotless! There was a stain in the closet that I was prepared to blow $100-$150 to clean up but otherwise how is it that they can charge me $200 to clean the kitchen? $65 to clean the fridge? And you're right - the elevators were always broken - not good if you're not athletic enough to run up and down the stairs.
