I moved into Houston House on Nov. '04. I currently live in a 2B/1B downtown facing unit and am moderately pleased with my experience.
First, I will list my complaints: -My apartment is fairly small. -I wish the water repairs would be completed and that the water was clear and drinkable. -Elevators could be in a better state. -Evening Concierges (Not Deborah in the Morning) could stand to be trained better and be more responsive to problems. -***Seriously need to consider hiring security for the garage.***
I had a moped stolen from the garage, my friend's motorcycle was stolen, and I know of countless other thefts and break-ins.
On the positive: -Rent rates are excellant for the area! -No electric bill is nice! -View is spectacular! -Noise is non-existant! -Appliances (in my apt., I know other's have older appliances) are new.
Overall, I would rate HH a 3. I like the building, managment is not bad, and things could definitely be worse! Also, I have lived in scarier places, so I'm not looking for perfection. Not to mention, perfection is not attainable and there is no way to make everyone happy.
I would like for the water issues to be resolved, and I truly believe that management is working to resolve the problems. With one elevator being down, the remaining two do the well. It was touch and go there for a while, but the elevators seem to be nearing a more reliable state.
I have not really had a problem with maintenance. They've erpaired my minor problems in a timely manner. Tony (the plumber) is very nice but seems constantly busy.
Based on my observations, it looks as though the owners of HH have hired new management and are making an honest effort to fix problems and keep residents happy. I'm willing to deal with slow elevators and water issues once a week just to keep from commuting! Everything is a balance and the scale hasn't been tipped towards the bad in my book (yet). I'll update my review periodically as things either continue to get better or degrade (hopefully that won't happen).
