My parents live in the Stratford area. When visiting them, I often drive by Kensington Club apartments. They're on Kimberly Lane, which has always been a short cut for locals who don't want to deal with traffic on Memorial Drive.

Since Katrina, it's hard not to notice all those welfare punks, I mean "refugees," hanging out in front of the apartments and at Nottingham Park across the street. It seems to get worse with time.

This afternoon, I drove by and saw about 20 police cars in various locations near these apartments. Some were parked, waiting to pick up traffic violators. Others were just cruising. Later in the evening, I drove by again and there were still cops all over the place. I've never seen anything like it.

I have to think that something is going on. My guess is that they're trying to make their presence known, but will go away soon. That would be unfortunate.

The area around Nottingham Park, including Kensington Apartments, has been marginal for at least 25 years and probably longer. That's because it's surrounded by apartments & townhomes. Somehow, they've managed to keep away the really scary people.

That has all changed since Katrina and it's causing big changes in the area. Long time residents are selling their homes and moving out. The new people moving in don't inspire much confidence. It's a classic case of white flight. I really never thought I'd see it happen there.

The Memorial corridor has been a kind of fortress for upper middle class white folks left over from the boom days of the 1960s and 1970s. It appears that there has been a breach in the western flank. I really hope this invasion is repelled, but don't hold out much hope.
