I feel sorry for all the new residents I see moving in because I was in their position last September and didn't see all of the problems until living here for some time. I'll start by mentioning that residents who lived here from late 2008 to late 2009 have taken the brunt of these building updates and were not offered a single discount or discount on renewing a lease. No lie, we went through at least 3 months of water shutdowns in the ENTIRE building. They would shut off the water for a week at a time from the hours of 8-5. They opened up a vacant unit as a community shower for residents... one word: GROSS!!! I would wake up to hammering and drills at 7am on the dot multiple times. Just what the doctor ordered!

I have a dog and the pest control both indoor and outdoor is not enough. I take proper medication precautions with my dog and bathe him more than enough but somehow he remains infested with fleas. I've only had this problem here. Memorial Towers has a 20x40 ft fenced area on the property which is the only place they want you walking your animals. I don't know about you but I'd imagine 50 dogs doing their business in that small of an area creates a fine nest for fleas reproduction. Oh, did I mention I found 3 ticks the size of pencil erasers on my dog all within the last 2 months? I don't take him to dog parks, so it's from here. We used to be able to walk dogs in the center courtyard but since this is on the "future resident" tour, they just banned it. What a way to take care of your current residents, huh?

Part of the huge restoration project was to fix the old water pipes throughout the building. I can report that we STILL have rusty water. DELICIOUS! I'm genuinely afraid to drink the water here for my health.

The elevators are really slow even though they replaced them in early 2009, which we also had to suffer through. They had one shut down at a time so only one functioned for the ENTIRE building. It was great when someone moved in or out with one small working elevator. The underground garage floods anytime it rains hard all day which is pretty often in Houston. Also, park down there and you risk rust dripping on your car which they will tell you they're not liable for. Again, what a way to take care of your residents. The fire alarm has gone off 3 times in the middle of night with no fire or explanation reported the next day. That was fun. About 3 weeks ago, we lost power randomly 3 or 4 times. Two of those being between 12am and 4am in the same morning so I can only guess how many other people were late for work because my alarm sure was blinking when I woke up an hour late for a meeting.

Carlos in maintenance is great so I have no complaints there. I wish I could take him with me!!! :) I will say I've had him fix something in my apartments at least 20 times over my one year term. That's not an exaggeration.

They aren't done with all the repairs because this building has far to go. I got lucky when I moved in and requested wood floors throughout to be installed since my rent was so high. Over $1000 for a one bedroom in a 1970s building. Funny enough, I thought they were updating all the apts but looks like they are getting people to sign with that nasty cheap berber carpet. Yuck. It's a shame they will cut costs everywhere they can instead of investing in more aesthetic updates.

For about a month I considered renewing because I HATE moving so often and I painted my interior but I refuse to give this place my money anymore. Even though I would rather live somewhere else, I tried to negotiate lower on my rent (taking into consideration all the BS we've had to deal with in the restoration) but they wouldn't budge. I'm glad they didn't because I've found a much better place, right around the corner. Hope this helps someone not make the same mistake I did.

Jennifer, We are very sorry to hear you were unhappy at the Memorial Towers. We are doing our best to make improvements to the building and make the community a better home for our residents. Thank you for bring the issue with the flees to our attention. We will have the grass and surrounding area treated for pests. The reason the dog park is preferred for pets instead of the courtyard, is to protect the flowers and landscaping from being damaged. If there is anything else we can do, please stop by the office and speak with us. We aim to offer the best service to our residents as possible. Sincerely, Memorial Towers Management

Jennifer...I feel your pain! I lived there from 2003-2008. I loved my apartment, the location was perfect. Then slowly as management began to change every other month, I experienced severe declines in my living conditions. My last straw was hurricane Ike. I lived on the 8th floor. We had no water or power in the building for 16 days. I was displaced for that entire time. They did not bring in a generator until late in the second week. I could have managed with no A/C, but not having power and water to flush the toilet was disgusting. There was no way I could haul pool water up 8 flights of stairs in the dark in order to flush. I'm not sure how those that remained tolerated the deplorable living conditions. The building should have been shut down for major renovations then, but the owner could not have cared less. When I did move back in, despite my meticulous sanitizing and deodorizing, I had knats in the toilet water! The manager sent an exterminator one time, then told me I needed to use ammonia to fix the problem. That did it. I wrote letters, called the health department, all to no avail. I requested discounted rent for being displaced and was denied because the hurricane was a "natural disaster" and not the fault of the building owner or management. I moved out when my lease ended and have never been happier. I was surprised to read such positive reviews over the past months, and was happy for the new residents. After reading your review, I can see some things never changed. The elevators were constantly broken when I was there, the water was frequently brown and turned off for no reason, and the fire alarms were a frequent aggravation. I'm glad you found a new home and agree, hopefully this will prevent another disastrous decision.

Jennifer was my neighbor and will not be happy where ever she and her nasty dog goes. It couldn't have been too bad for the anonymous guy who lived here for 5 years!! Thanks for both sharing the negative things that "used to be"!! Please, I invite everyone to come see our beautiful life here. Angela, Athene, & Carlos will make sure you feel like family and you can't put a price on that!!

Sounds like someone from management posted this one, haha. Or someone one their behalf... How funny! Why don't you say your name if you're going to try and call out me and my "nasty" dog. I am LOVING where I live now and don't have a single complaint except I should have move sooner!
