Over the past 10 years, I've rented 8 apartments in Houston. I was a resident at Rio Grande Ranch (RGR) from May05 to Nov06. I must say the management team is the most professional staff I've EVER encountered.
In addition, there are a few other concerns I would like to address. (1) In comparison to other apt complexes with high turn around rates, the staff has remained the same. I am greeted by name when I pay rent & pick up packages. (2) ALL issues with my apartment are handled expeditiously. SAME DAY if you call in the AM. (3) Believe me, it does not matter what apartments you live in, it is likely you will encounter problems with parking. At other apts I have had people repeatedly park in MY assigned spot! No problems at RGR. (4)Rats are everywhere because they live in the sewers! (5) As long as thieves exist, your car & apartment are never safe. Houses, Apartments, and Cars are burglarized every day. . . at the Mall. . . at the Clubs. . . at the Grocery Store! Hello, this is Houston!! I drive a 2006 Ford F-150 & I have never encountered a problem. I dont even have a garage!
***The problem arises with apartments when RENTERS are driving vehicles with $2000 CUSTOM CHROME 24in rims, 5 STAR sound systems, 15in TV screens, and Video Game Systems. . . Living in a damn apartment. Note to self - these PimpMyRide vehicles are a Thieves Paradise! Hell, if you have money like that, then go buy a house. Better yet. . . go live in Midtown. But wait. . . you will STILL encounter the same problems!!! This is Houston, the largest city in Texas and the fourth largest in the United States.
The ONLY reason I stopped renting - surprisingly - the Houston area has become more affordable to *OWN* and increasingly expensive to rent apartments. If you REALLY want to know where NOT to live. . . respond to this blog. If you want to move . . . then call MoveForFree! If you want to be safe . . . get an alarm! If you are scared . . . go to Church!
This is Houston! Love It or Leave It!

I currently live in Austin and will be relocating to Houston soon. I appreciate your post because all the others were scaring me. I have been looking at the apt online and I am really considering it. I don't like rats, roaches and ect,but there is a such thing called pest control and I just have to make sure I have rental insurance.

Excellent advice. Renters also need to be keep in mind, if you live smart, then most likely nothing will happen to you. The statistics are in your favor. Don't stay out late by yourself. At the very least, get an alarm system! I can't stress this enough. (Get an alarm system for your car, preferably a garage if you can afford it.) I have an alarm system, a dog (Shar-Pei mix with a "big dog" bark that will rip to shreds anyone who attempts to break in), and a shotgun (Much better stopping power than a pistol. One shot can severely hurt someone & they are extremely intimidating so if a thief hears the "click-clack" of the pump action, they will most likely run away). It's funny... the other day someone tried to come in my front gate (I forgot and left it unlocked)and the moment my dog heard the clicking sound of the gate handle, he barked VERY loudly and the person didn't even get the gate half way open before they took off. Any dog, even if it is a small dog, can be a great deterrent (as long as they bark to alert you).
